Good luck to them.

A pretty stupid analogy. Do you have a source so we can ridicule the author of that quote?

Why make a new hole? Wouldn't it be easier to continue drilling down that bigass hole in Russia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kola_Superdeep_Borehole

-edit-

ah they start underwater, saves a lot of drilling

From what I understand, the ground underneath Russia's borehole makes it difficult to dig any deeper. Presumably, the theory is that making an underwater borehole will fix some of those issues.

Well, I think it was to underline the difficulty involved in deep water drilling - not really anything to do with the measurements or scale of it. I don't read that much, so if I had to guess I'd say I picked it up from A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson.

Though, superquickgoogle
University article about drilling ship : http://www-public.jcu.edu.au/news/archive/JCUPRD_053727
Furious Earth: The Science and Nature of Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Tsunamis by Ellen J Prager

So it's been doing the rounds for years.

Because space is a hell of a lot more useful to humanity than taking samples of the mantle.

First thing that came to my mind was the movie "The Core" biggrin.gif
