I usually get the around the advertised 15Mbps up, 1.5Mbps down. only pulled 12-1 right now cause the wife is watching Netflix.
They used to be terrible, very terrible. I had a long and drawn out battle with them a couple years back. Never had a problem since.
It's more about terrible customer service, I do think their link quality has improved over the past few years. They had a mass exodus because gamers got them since they were the cheap ISP and you couldn't go more than 2 - 3 games of CoD in a row without getting dropped (the term for this in my town is "you got SuddenLinked"). I had a friend who used SuddenLink and his Internet went out, he called up customer service and they told him they'd get a line tech out within 3 - 6 weeks to take a look.
At work we have a fiber line from SuddenLink and we do lots of web hosting. One day minutes before our VP and a couple sales guys began an important web demo and sales pitch, our connection was disconnected and they had to just talk without any kind of demonstration of the software we host. We called SuddenLink and they claimed to not know anything about it. We looked out the office window and sure enough there was a SuddenLink truck and a couple workers with a big spool of fiber there. They just cut our line to do some maintenance and didn't bother informing us first!
The crazy thing is the potential clients who didn't get a demo still signed up!
Our other ISP is CenturyLink (used to be Embarq). They're expensive at $67/month for 10 megabit but we never have issues with them. We always get the advertised 10 Mb speed and we only have maybe one outage a year, and it's usually some regional thing so they never have to send a tech out to our house to fix things. Customer service has always been extremely polite and helpful the handful of times I've called them. They never treated me like a complete idiot.
As usual, YMMV. I'm sure in other regions they're flipped.
