[OMG! Ubuntu!] Steam for Linux to Arrive ‘In a Few Days’ - Page 11

win 7 runs flawless when its running flawless. ive had my fair share of BSOD and corruptions + random installation from MS. not saying it wouldn't happen on Linux but i could guarantee that would be within the first day not months into a system build! once you iron out Linux and sort your drivers out its stable, YOU choose if you want to update and it doesn't mean the end of the world like with MS windows.

windows 7 is a genuinely great O/S in many ways but i think there is equal room for mac o/s and Linux distros now.

one more point, over the years ive noticed system pauses (not thorough lack of performance) where by a service or something on windows decides its time to run, not great when watching a movie, not great when texture streaming a game level, or listening to music. The worlds largest operating system is literally the worlds largest operating system (read fat and overly complex). On Linux im looking at system monitor and there is about 20 small services and the computer is silent, it doesn't interrupt me and that gives me real confidence to do what i want on the system and not be inundated with anit-virus popus, superfetching, oddball randomness and data gathering. With windows you feel like its all been stringed together rather than properly built up from the ground

That may be what's really holding up any more Half Life, they need to get their people experience with OGL, so first these ports to linux and then the main event.
If Valve really is developing an API to make linux porting easy enough to bother with then this truly signals Valve positioning themselves to be THE PC gaming company. For all intents it will become their platform, we just play there. In some ways that great, in others not so much, because these moves they are making will completely leave behind the competition. Leaders that lack competitiors become stagnant.
On the other hand it will mean a large library of titles for Mac and Linux which will put them both on the map as far as gaming goes. Now if only someone would perma-crack the DRM on blu-ray so that VLC could play them. Never need to boot Windows again.

If it's an API DX to OGL translator how optimized can it be? I thought that was the whole reason that people didn't bother with them or laughed when someone suggests such a thing? Still, even if it ends up being unoptimised it's better than nothing. Though, on the other hand then I wonder why not just convince the devs to invest a little time working with the WINE guys to get their games working that way?

As for the Bluray thing; well there's always MakeMKV or other programs and then run them through XBMC or an Mplayer frontend (VLC is inferior to them). That said...there was a way of adding in Bluray keys that was supposed to allow any player then to work but I've never tried it out.

Surprisingly optimized, actually, that's why you still get higher FPS running some games through wine than on native Windows; the overhead really isn't that high now they've got DX9 nailed down.

The way I see it, using a translator is good, but native is better. People who are against translators completely are never going to run any of the current games on Linux even if Steam eventually brings Linux gaming to the mainstream, I doubt EA is going to convert BF3 to OpenGL, but if sales were high enough for Valve they may put a translator in to have a Linux version.
