30 days of Linux Challenge Free BSD & LMDE

Ok as I mentioned in the uname -a thread that I've dabbled a bit with various flavors of Nix. I haven't messed with anything more than command line in some time. I'd set it up on a KVM switch and then just SSH over to dabble much like I've done in my work settings. Since I just couldn't wait on my next build to be financed I've scrounged a spare 250GB drive and working on getting the sig rig to dual boot. I'm looking to run FreeBSD and wanting to try X-Windows again. In the past I generally leaned on Fluxbox, which I liked because it seemed clean and elegant. I tried Enlightenment but it always seemed to run sluggishly(circa 2001-2004). The things that have attracted me most about Windows 7 is the transparency effects and glassy feel you can get with it. It's also what drew me in with OSX. Outside of that the dock features like in 7 and OSX are kind of nice. The less I'm reminded of Win NT/2k/XP the happier I think I'd be. I might start with fluxbox again or I might try looking into some of the other options eg. awesome looks interesting. Any recommendations/suggestions? I will warn you my previous nix box was a very old 32bit athlon with 512MB RAM and a similar aged low end video card. Any feed back and suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Why not run Linux in a virtual machine instead of dual booting?

[edit]

oh, and if it's visual effects that interest you, then you need either: KDE4, Cinnamon or anything with Compiz as the window manager.

I'll make sure to check those out. @Plan9 I haven't looked too close at running a VM yet. It's something I'll have to consider. I'll admit I've been known to be a sucker for pretty and shiny in the past.

Give VirtualBox a try as it's a free virtualisation solution and is pretty easy to use.

The only draw back of running VMs is that you probably wont have enough power to run all your pretty things in Linux. But it's a good place to start as dual booting can sometimes be so much of a pain that switching OSs simply isn't worth the hassle.

How about trying something a bit more interesting? Say... compiz-standalone? http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic/14406/compizfusion-standalone-on/

What is Standalone and how does that differ from the regular builds of Compiz Fusion?

It's using just Compiz without any background DE. Instead of using it from within XFCE or Gnome, you just use Compiz and it's Beryl WM. Then you can pair it with a dock (awn, docky, etc )or panel(tint,tn,etc) and heve a full desktop experience, or not, up to the user smile.gif.

You get all the flash, all the extensions and plugins, but without all the trash from /most/ DE's.

Will have to look into that aspect.I'll probably be dabbling for a long while till I get a look and feel I'm happy with. It's refreshing the number of options I have here vs the limits of some other systems. Compiz sounds like it's worth a look possibly. Lots of things to research for sure. Thank you all for the good info so far. I'm still leaning toward dualboot vs VM for now. I'll look into playing with Virtual Box a bit once the Nix is up and running.

My only take on VM's is that I'd be too lazy to use the VM and instead just end up using the host system instead of the VM. Although that's just me, great for certain things, but the way my mind works and learns is by just hitting things head on.

Otherwise if you aren't like me, then a VM is a great learning tool. smile.gif
