anyone know how to add entries to the session options on the login screen for LMDE. When I added fluxbox it updated. When I added E17 it updated. When I added compiz it doesn't. All the guides I can find talk about editing config files for gnome and replacing the WM for gnome or forcing it to load by calling it via startup. I'm thinking the trick to building a custom tailored DU is to add an entry into what ever LMDE pulls data from to populate the session list and pulls data from a different file that tells LMDE what to load to make up the custom DE. I'm just not sure how to proceed and my searches aren't coming up with anything overly useful at the moment. Am I on the right track?

edit: I think I might have finally found a few articles that covers what I'm looking for.
This is how to make the DE. Here's where I'd edit the session options on login...if I'm reading correctly...can't wait to get home and find out for sure.

ok I was wanting to resort my partitions on my drive so I wiped everything and reinstalled LMDE and now it wont let me install anything. Is there anything I missed with this?

update:

So I ran update and updated everything. It's allowing me to install stuff now but it's acting odd. It says it's installing then when it's showing about 50% done it stops and says not installed but I log out and back in it's installed. Also the update seems to have removed the one color theme I really liked and doubled the entries for Mint and the other linux option by default. It did not how ever double up on the Win XP64 install on the other drive. I'm not sure what to make of this at this point. I'll try hitting up the LMDE forums in the morning and figure out how badly I've managed to bork this install. Though I have a feeling the articles I linked to in the edit/update of the previous article is what I was looking for when trying to get a custom GUI/DE. Night all and see you in about 6-8hrs

I have the custom session showing up in the list. I have it making a call to the startup script. I'm trying to figure out why cairo-dock crashes as soon as it loads. I'm not sure if not everything it needs installed or what. I get a few errors before it fails totally. I am on the right path....I just need to figure out how to dial all in the bits and parts to get the look and feel I'm really after. I'll post pics as I get the dock working.

Still researching the issue with cairo-dock. For those following along here's the output of
Code:
cairo-dock -l debug > debugOut.txt
which should have captured all the debug text from when I started till the crash which is pretty much instantaneous.
Warning it's rather long (over 1k lines)

Link to paste bin

In other news I fixed my grub issues in an unintended manner. I in a sleepy state ended up wiping the 2nd drive to try another clean install and had to repair the boot sector and MBR on my windows drive. I used to XP64 install disk entered recovery mode and ran fixboot and fixmbr. Once I recovered XP without issue I formatted the 2nd drive as NTFS (I wanted to be sure previous install traces were gone) and then did a new install of LMDE. I still saw the same issues using the GUI installer for software until I updated but I didn't lose the peppermint theme this time. I also retitled the thread as this is turning more into a journal of what I'm doing with linux in my first several weeks of working with again than anything. I'm intending to post issues, failures, and successes I have as they happen along with how I got into and out of the situation on the off chance it's useful to someone else. As always constructive feedback is most welcome and appreciated.

10 days into LMDE and finding it a lot more enjoyable than FreeBSD. I'm not saying FreeBSD makes a poor MS Windows desktop replacement OS. My primary issues have been my lack of confidence and patience. Getting X Windows and sound to work the way I wanted to was taking more of an effort and time I wanted to spend on it. I switched to LMDE and out of the gate everything works. As I stated elsewhere I haven't touched windows hardly at all since I jumped to Mint, prior I spent more time in windows. At some point I need to pick WoW back up but for now I'm enjoying Linux too much to worry about it.

Custom DE project.
I tried to load Compiz Fusion Icon in my custom DE and it crashes on boot and cario refuses to load unless I disable plugins.

Goals:
  • Get the session stable
  • Sort out issues with Cairo and try other docks
  • Tune the experience to have the look and feel I'm after along with cohesion.
  • Share what I've learned and possibly write up a guide highlighting some of the finer tricks to making it work.

Other issues to look into:

Find out why my 20GiB root partition is already over 30% full.
I'm suspecting logs from the various session crashes but need time when I'm awake and alert enough to investigate.

Random aside

Mute toggles can be really hard to see at the bottom of the mixer panels.

For your Cairo-Dock issue, have you installed both Cairo Dock and its addon package? Some (most? all?) distro's package Cairo-Dock as two seperate entities, one will not run without the other. (I see you have tried booting it with addons disabled and that works) Also, Cairo-Dock requires Direct Rendering just like Compiz so does the command "glxinfo | grep rendering" return a result that would indicate direct rendering capabilities? I tried to look at your crashlog on pastebin but it appears to 404. Since you noted something about both Cairo-dock and Fusion-icon crashing out, I would suggest looking into "glxinfo | grep rendering" and see if you can figure out if direct rendering support is enabled or not. If it is; then something is really really weird. If it isn't then try installing nvidia drivers and the nvidia utils, since you are using an nvidia chip. If they are already installed then somehow they aren't getting loaded on boot, I'll have to do research on how to diagnose that sort of issue.
From there, your root partition is likely filling up due to two things:
Package Manager Cache (Google around on how to clean this up depending on distro
/var/log - keep an eye on this folder; if you have a log that is getting spammed with enough text data to fill up a partition - theres probably a problem. Cleaning out old logs isn't a horrible practice either.

Thanks for the advise to check
Code:
glxinfo | grep rendering
It is enabled. It seems I forgot to take the & on the last line that wasn't commented out in my init script for my custom session and that's what X-Windows was freaking out about.

Not sure what happened to the paste bin Link Here's the correct one

and lastly apt-get cache was indeed part of my space issues. To update still no cairo-dock without disabling plugins also going to try some of the docks recommended earlier in this thread though not giving up on cairo just seeing what other things are out there.

Looks like a dodgy clock theme that is causing your cairo-dock problems, if you disable the clock plugin, which isn't really needed anyway as there is a clock on the main taskbar, it should work.

Cairo-Dock has crashed (sig 11).

I'm assuming you are logging into Mate, as Compiz doesn't work with Cinnamon, make sure you disable the Mate window manager (marco) as this causes high CPU usage (for some reason marco keeps on running after it has been replace with Compiz).

The best out of the box LMDE version I've found, is the unofficial LMDE KDE UP5 distro, especially with Update Pack 5 which saves having to download 1Gb of updates, (the other LMDE versions are on UP4.) Cinnamon and Mate are ok windows managers but I've found they aren't really up to prime time, (espcially with a dual monitor setup) but KDE has matured into a very stable WM.

1. KDE is a DE
2. I think those statements about MATE and Cinnamon are completely unfounded. give me some hard data.

Actually I added a .desktop file to usr/share/xsessions and using a shell script to launch the elements I'm wanting for a cust GUI environment. I'm not trying to craft apps from scratch and using existing applications. So far it 's just Compiz, Nautilus, Cairo-Dock. I'm also trying to learn what each piece is actually doing and how they couple together to give the overall experience. Until I get this project at least functional or near finished enough for me to be happy with my current GUI "home" in Linux is Mate, I run Compiz as the WM more often then not.
Things to do...still
  • Sort out Cairo. (Partially fixed. It's not crashing after I removed the "Folders" applet. It's just not updating themes anymore and still need to figure out why it's not able to load it's key mappings.
  • Figure out what functionality Nautilus is bringing exactly (trying to run fusion-icon with out it and cario had interesting results)
  • Sort out how to theme Compiz and start making it presentable and suited to my designs.
  • Identify other items I might want for Compiz

---
Edit-
Updated the cairo-dock status and listed what I did to fix it.
