GTX 670 SLI vs 7970 crossfire - Page 4

I'm a 7970 owner and I feel the 7970 wins in overall performance when both cards are overclocked. However the 670 is cooler and quiter, and Nvidia always wins in BF3 this time around. I play BF3 just fine, but it's not my main game.

In my opinion' If BF3 is the only game you care about, get the 670. If you have lots of different games that you play, it's hard to notice the difference between 100 and 110 fps in BF3. I'd get the 7970 for fun OC'ing and overall performance.

It's a 120Hz monitor so I want 120 fps so it's running at full capacity and getting the best performance
(steady 120 fps)
I plan to get one card first of either and then buy another one at a later date

OP there is no single gpu single card solution that will net you a constant 120fps, you will need Xfire or SLI. I recommend either 7970 xfire or 670 SLI , i recommend 670 or 680 because the performance is extremely similar.

OP:
Since you are sticking to a single monitor and wanting this for BF3, the 670's hands down. Everything else aside they simply are faster in the circumstances given. Both are great cards of course.

Well whats a better way to describe turbo other then a stock overclocking system built right into the card?
And a 7970 will be more reverent in 1-2year then the GTX670 would be thats for sure.

Fluidity on both cards are damn near the same and without a FPS viewer it would feel almost the same. You can get a 7970 non GE for about the same price as a GTX670 and its a overall faster card. Why try and talk somebody into a weaker card? Kinda feels like i'm going up against Nvidia fan boys. Next thing I know someone going to bring up the old "It has Physx" argument.

That is a valid argument, actually... And it tessellates (sp) better. And it has CUDA. And it turboes. And it runs cooler. And it runs quieter. And it consumes less power.

I am far from a Nvidia fanboy, you can read my past posts and ask others. I am very sure a 670 will become irrelevant the same year a 7970 will be, which will be far away for both. And the boost feature is just how Kepler works, it is part of the architecture. It is not cheating or giving false information or anything else you said in a few posts back. Just because the card does not run the same as the other one does not make it wrong (Insert many real world examples).

All i said is its not fair to compare a 7970 to a GTX680. Its more fair to compare the 7970GE just because It also has turbo, and now that is does the card pretty much go back and forth more with the 7970 on top. So trying to compare a GTX670 to a Card that compete with a GTX680 doesn't make since to me. You can Pick up a 7970 for less then $400 and just overclock it and have more performance then the $410 you'll be spending on the GTX670. 1150-1250mhz is pretty standard on normal 7970s, At that speed even a 1300mhz GTX670 would have trouble keeping up.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/08/23/galaxy_gtx_660_ti_gc_oc_vs_670_hd_7950/3

Thats a Overclocked 7950 @ 1190mhz going up against a GTX670 @ 1300mhz
look at the min for BF3, clearly the GTX670's memory bandwidth is to blame for that. Thats at 1080p as well

7970 does better then that. 1250mhz on a 7970 would take on a GTX680 @ 1300mhz.

7950 is more in the GTX670 league then the 7970 is.

Personally I would like to know how your comparing these cards to have the GTX670 come out on top? You do realize that GCN gains more from Overclocking then kepler does. Just like Fermi gained more from a overclock then VLIW did last gen. So a 250mhz OC on a 7970 will do a more then a 250mhz OC would on a GTX680.

This isn't even a contest. The 7970 competes with the GTX680. So of course the 7970 is faster than a GTX 670. It would take roughly a 1350MHz GTX 670 to equal a HD7970 at 1200 core. Good luck finding a 670 that clocks that high. They're out there, but rare.

If all you care about is BF3 though, or any other Nvidia biased title, then obviously the Nvidia card is the one for you. If you play a variety of games, then get the faster card, which that's the 7970.
