Will this setup work for DDR3-2133?

I'm building a new rig soon with the following parts:
ASUS P8Z77 V-LK
i7-3770k
G.skill sniper series 2133Mhz 8gb

My question is: the motherboard says you can OC RAM to 2133, but how easy is this to do on this motherboard, and what kind of compatibility problems might come up?

I don't have experience with the Sniper series, but G.Skill puts out some excellent memory. Ivy Bridge is very capable of hitting high memory speeds, so 2133 should be easy. I personally think it's not ad terterrible idea to get a kit rated for higher than your intended overclock (unless the particular kit has a reputation for being an excellent overclocker), as it will give you more flexibility to hit the speed you want and often with tighter timings. For example, I have the G.Skill Ripjaws Z 2133cl9 16GB kit, which can hit 2400 at 10-12-10 or 2133 at 9-11-10 and some kits will easily do 9-11-9/9-10-10 at 2133, andas you drop the speed, you can get 8-9-8 @ 1866, 7-7-7 @ 1600, and even CAS6 on occasion.

Right now, apart from the Trident X series, I think that the Ripjaws Z kits are the most flexible you can get for the price, matching or beating most everything else regardless of price.

I was able to find a Patriot 8GB kit intended for 2400MHz, which it claims is designed specially for Ivy Bridge and is tested to work with XMP. I could try going 2133 with that, and get better timings? Would a few milliseconds really be noticeable?

I find that in day to day multitasking, having the lowest possible timings is best. Raw speed is best for anything bandwidth intensive such as rendering, photoshop, and to a somewhat lesser extent gaming. However, if you can get the best of both worlds, why not go for it?
I personally think that anything exceeding 2133 gives returns that diminish by orders of magnitude, and thus is the "sweet spot". Others may disagree, but I don't think that the gain in synthetic benches is worth the very loose timings required to run super fast memory, and the immense cash cost to have both is not worthwhile either.
I am absolutely satisfied with 2133 9-11-10-28 although I will see if I can get 9-10-10 or better, just to stretch my memory's legs.

I've placed the order for my new build. I ended up getting an 8GB 2400MHz kit, which is advertised to be XMP compatible, so overclocking to 2133 should be easy. The ASUS Motherboard is advertised to be able to hit 2800MHz.

Specs:
i7-3770k (Going to OC)
8GB DDR3 @2133MHz
Radeon HD 7850 Crossfire x2
ASUS P8Z77-V LK
256GB SSD
2TB HDD
750w PSU

Looks great! I think you will get some fantastic performance from that build, everything is very well matched.

Now you just have to stick some custom water cooling in there and crank up the CPU and GPUs til they cry wink.gif
