Mix DDR and DDR2

Thread Starter
I know you don't get the benefit of DDR2, but can you use a stick in a 939 motherboard?

Also m friend is getting a celeron laptop with DDR2, can she use DDR with it or does it have to be DDR2 ??

Just curious, I know its best to use the same type/speed of memory

I never heard you being able to mix it, you must either use what your mobo supports, some mobos though can use DDR in an intel chipset.

Not a chance. DDR only works on DDR motherboards, DDR2 only works on DDR2 motherboards.

DDR has 184 pins, DDR2 has 240 pins.

They are not compatable.

Not sure on the laptop as they use different ram.

DDR and DDR2 have a different number of contacts, and neither of them fits in the slots of the opposite modules, so, no, it's impossible. Even in boards like my own one, with slots for DDR adn DDR2 you can't use both at once.

what if the laptop comes with DDR2

will it accept a DDR module?

This is the main question, as my friend just ordered a new laptop, but had ordered a 512 stick for the other laptop I fixed for him. The new laptop uses DDR2 but the old one used DDR so basically can he mix them ?

Both are SODIMM modules (240 I think??)

Negative.

DDR1 & DDR2 are both 200-pin.

Regardless you cannot mix them no matter what. DDR1 & DDR2 weren't meant to work in conjunction with each other. Even if you did get them to work (in theory) you would have to have two separate BIOS'es to modify timings or even get the timings to be separate because a DDR2 module can't run at 2-2-2-5 while a DDR1 module can.
