I'm pretty sure boot up is taking longer with my memory clocked to 2133MHz...why?

Hey guys!

Important bits:
ASRock Extreme6. (also had same issue with Extreme4 Gen3)
Patriot Viper 3 2133MHz ( http://microcenter.com/product/397002/Intel_Extreme_Masters_Viper_3_8GB_DDR3-2133_(PC3-17000)_CL9_Desktop_Memory_Kit_(Two_4GB_Memory_Modules) )

With the system defaulting to 1600MHz, the system boots fine, but with the memory clocked up to 2133MHz the system seems to hang at the Win7 Glowing orb for an extra 30 seconds.

I also noticed that the XMP profile for the ram in the bios is for 2000MHz, I have to manually set it to 2133MHz.

The motherboard is advertized to be able to run 2800MHz+

Why is it taking so long to boot with the memory set to 2133? It's 2133 Memory, it should work.

Wish I could figure this out frown.gif

Sometimes severe overclocks are actually not beneficial and make things slower rather then faster, this goes for cpus and gpus as well.

I just dont understand because, it's a 2600k, the motherboard is 2800+ RAM compatible, the ram is factory clocked at 2133MHz...but it wont run right. Is there bench software I can use that checks for errors? I want it to run right. My motherboard is compatible and I spent the cash.

Help?

Use Memtest 86+ to test your RAM. Sometimes some mobos will not work right with some RAM even though it's rated to run at that Hz.

Also you may need to increase the DRAM voltage in Bios or loosen the RAM timings to get it working right.

This is probably the answer, the easiest first thing to try is bump the voltage to 1.65.

check your timings... particularly the 2nd and 3rd timings "sets".

With them on Auto and RAM set to 2133mhz..

& check again with RAM set to 1600mhz.

If your stable.. your stable.. but tertiary timings can move and do.. with increased speed. This can be counter-productive to latency. If the timings dont appear to be loosening up too much.. then you likely need some more IMC voltage.

**I have noticed my Pi times improve for some mem freqs when I may be stable with RAM speed, but increase IMC volts only..
