Google Fiber’s pending rollout in Kansas City has certainly drawn the attention of jealous geeks all across the country—but now the company’s rivals are feeling a little envious.

I recommend reading the full article. it's pretty short and shows exactly what they're wanting.

My take: If TWC and ATT want the same treatment as Google, they should've offered gigabit years ago. Now that Google has decided to take on the ISPs of the world they're getting all cranky because they want the status quo to remain. As it is, mobile data rates are insane and home ISPs can scalp pretty hard too. I'd say give TWC and ATT the same treatment as Google if they offer Gigabit. If not? No deal.

Google created a playing field that is completely unfair to TWC and AT&T. Now those companies are butt-hurt that the internet giant is beating them at their own game.

If TWC and AT&T want to compete and not just push google out of town, I think it's fair, but knowing those companies, let them continue to pay more per utility pole. Who cares.

I work just north of KC for the local cable company here....and I cannot wait for them to migrate north and shut this place down... minus the no job part.

I would kill to have that internet deal

I love watching att lose money! Makes my day!

It seems reasonable. If they're willing to commit to the sort of infrastructure Google is creating, then it'd be in KC's best interest to allow them the same advantages, and I'm sure they'd get it. But to compete, they'll have to be competitive in more ways than just infrastructure -- aka pricing schemes will have to be as good as Google's, which could be interesting. biggrin.gif

The reason why Kansas rolled out a "red carpet" for Google, is because Google was doing something that would ultimately do Kansas a lot of good.

The tone I get from Americans on this forum is that AT&T (and its service) is scum of the earth lol.

Yup, if KS offered a "level playing field" to all ISP's, the entire Google Fiber deal wouldn't be as sweet as it APPEARS. It's only because a State Government, like certain cases of the Obama Administration, spends tax payer money and "picks the winners" ... then goes on TV and whines about how companies should offer a "level playing field", all the while, it's the government who is intentionally not making the playing field level.

But then again, this is nothing new. The government has been doing that for decades. Just look at the tax breaks for minority and women owned companies.

As I stated previously, Google was given the ability to do what it did because it would ultimately benefit the whole of Kansas in the long run.

I'm sure if AT&T were so interested in doing similar, they'd have asked and been granted permission also.

I think the problem as most will attest, is that AT&T did/do not give a single rat sphincter about bettering the lives of their customers in any way, shape or form.

The very fact that AT&T is now jumping up and down all of a sudden wanting to offer similar innovative/market competitive products, only after Google threatened to kick them to the curb is a win in its own right.
