With AM2 or Core Duo you need to consider DDR2 RAM also.
With your MB I'd opt for a 170, a bit less money than the 175 and just as OCable where as the 165 demands very high bus speeds

if you have quality ram i'd suggest getting the opty 165. it'll be your best chance to overclock. 170 will be a bit better, but i would shy away from the 175.

also like duke said you're going to have to buy new memory w/ either the AM2 or the Conroe....so just stick w/ s939 and an opty and you should be happy

It's cheaper but dead-end if you intend on upgrading in a few years.

in a few years anyways you'll be updating motherboards AND processors anyways due to DDR3 coming out, so why not just get an opty for the board you already have? its not dead technology, its still hella fast. name a p4 that can keep up w/ my smokin opty??

There will also be some future developments that may render AM2/Conroe a dead end solution as well (possible). If I have learned anything from building computers is never plan for the long run (there is no such thing as "long run" in the PC industry). The best money concious upgrade he can make is a skt939 DC and wait futher down the road for affordable DX10 GPUs (that's what I'm doing). No problem with going Conroe/AM2, but as mentioned earlier it will take extra costs, costs which may not be worth it if you pay attention to where the industry is moving.

I was looking the price range, I forgot I'd have to get new memory now for the core 2 duo (can't use the DDR at all right?)

That would increase the upgrade even more

I may just keep my 3200 oc'd to 2500 mhz and add a 7600 gt for a temporary boost in gaming and later on when AMD releases its new technology see how it rates with conroe.

If I do get a X2 processor, what do you think of this processor/deal:

AMD Opteron 170 Denmark 2.0GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model OSA170CDBOX - Retail $184.99
