Dont confuse OP though. I believe the smoothness @ 120fps on a 60hz monitor is the decreased I/O lag time of such high framerate, and not actually a higher displayed FPS than 60fps, which the monitor cannot display.

I'm talking about serious games like bf3 not an rts that looks like its from 2003. I just don't see any practical use for 120

And are you saying 120 looks better than aa on 60?

120fps will definately look worse on a 60hz monitor - youll get a crap ton of tearing

vysnc will remove tearing, but introduce a bit of input lag (some cases wont matter unless its a reflex dependant type of game like)

It's not something we can just convince you of. It's something you have to experience first hand. And yes, running slightly lower settings to hit 120+ on a 120hz monitor is definitely more beneficial than running ultra everything with 60 fps. You'll never know until you try it.

When you dont want to use vsync(causes tiny amount of input lag) and your fps is going above your max framerate of your monitor which is 60fps.

Games like BF3 online multiplayer you want the smallest amount of input lag possible(the time it takes that you move your mouse to when your character moves on screen). That fraction of a second could mean life or death on the Battlefield.

It really is something that needs to be evaluated by a case by case basis. I run most of my games with vsync on but is some cases I will opt to turn it of to get some extra smoothness. However I can't stand screen tearing so if I get a lot of that then I will turn vsync back on. It's all about finding whats right for you. For example running +150FPS in counter strike TF2 (or any source engine game) is wonderfully smooth even with a standard 60Hz monitor. On the other hand I ran original crysis vsyced at 40-50 FPS. I opted to keep vsycn on because the FPS would go over 60 and cause terrible screen tearing in some places.

Frame limiting and adaptive vsyn are ways to try and get best of both world but do not always have the desired effect so all you can do is try them out and see.

Indeed, although it's not a large improvement.

Input lag below is that of the graphics card and frame generation, not the display itself.

60fps at 60hz = 16.7ms to 33.3ms input lag = ~25ms input lag
120fps at 60hz = 16.7ms to 25ms input lag = ~20.8ms input lag

60fps at 120hz = 8.3ms to 25ms input lag = ~16.7ms input lag
120fps at 120hz = 8.3ms to 16.7ms input lag = ~12.5ms input lag
240fps at 120hz = 8.3ms to 12.5ms input lag = ~10.4ms input lag
