GPU's degrading? - Page 2

I think the halogen bulb test does kind of suggest it's not the PSU, but normally it's the first thing I'd suspect with those symptoms. That said, the halogen bulbs are just going to draw current at a somewhat smooth and consistent rate, wheras the GPUs spiking up and down would be stressing the voltage regulation more, as the PSU tries to hold the voltages correct while the load varies all over the place, so it could well still be the PSU.

The only test I can think of is folding at the settings that caused it to power off on one GPU at a time and see what happens. I know that does muddy the waters due to the lower power draw, but if it's a GPU you might discover which one it is.

I'd also be inclined to just RMA the PSU if you can, the symptoms so strongly suggest a PSU issue, and letting it keep doing this may prove expensive if somethings about to pop - I recently had an AX1200 kill my motherboard and I think I was lucky it didn't damage more than that, there were no symptoms prior to the failure and it went rather dramatically - room full of smoke etc. If I was getting power downs like this, I'd be very wary of continuing to use the PSU involved.

I totally disregarded voltage spikes, that is true. The part of the PSU taking out your board kinda woke me up, what the hell am i doing here... I will try to get hold of another capable enough PSU this week for testing. My PSU is not even a year old so I can easily RMA it if need be. It'd maybe take some weeks worst case so I'll try to be sure first.

Whenever I start folding at 880Mhz it takes out the system within 2-3 minutes so its easy to reproduce by now. Folding on both cards with just one card overclocked was stable for either of the cards so far. I don't really want to run things overnight before ruling out the PSU now. Maybe it crashes too but not as quick, doesn't sound logical but so far I fail to see the logic behind all of this anyway.

I managed to get hold of another X-1250 PSU. I'm curious what'll happen now. Well, overnight folding session dead ahead unless it craps out on me during the next hour smile.gif

I have seen many times GPUs degrade over time. And the more OC, the faster it will happen, almost guarantied.

Which is why I don't OC GPUs any longer. The factory OC models degrade quicker as well I've noticed.

Ho hum... still folding like a tank so far. Sad thing I've got to return the second X-1250 soon (no way I'll put that expensive unit on the backup hardware shelf, although I was tempted for a second or two)
Maybe, just maybe this'll be it. I'll fold some more, gotta get back to work anyway. wheee.gif

aaaand still folding like a tank. Really, I just plugged in the other X-1250 and even used the old power cabling. Everything suggests unstable PSU at this point. The post office is closed already so I'll take care of the RMA tomorrow.
I need to return the other X-1250 too but I've ordered some way smaller PSU to keep me afloat during the time. Can't hurt to have one on the backup hardware shelf anyway. I recall having some 500W stored away somewhere, wherever it is, can't find it... oh well it was about a decade old anyway rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the input guys!

No worries, glad to see you got it sorted. That backup hardware shelf does come in handy - until your girlfriend/wife gets hold of it like mine did and sells half of it on ebay!!!
