the iphone 5 and s3 international have the same chip. the us version has the crappy qualcomm chip

Like I said, audiophile kool-aid. rolleyes.gif

There is no evidence to suggest that modern DACs sound different. There hasn't been any for the last several decades, actually. wink.gif

^ Yes, there's plenty actually. The problem is, some people hear better than others.

Audiophiles rave over Apple devices because of the LOD which allows for audio-over-USB which in turn allows them to use an external DAC (so double processing) and/or an external amplifier. The LOD also supports Line-out which you can get with the FiiO L9 (and some other cables from FiiO. Some people do a DIY cable).

You can connect almost any USB DAC to Android phones now (some ICS and all JB roms).

Lol, no it's pure science. People's are able to hear different frequencies to others, for whatever reasons.

S3 has the exact same feature.

they measure differently. yeah the differences aren't major among decent ones but they are there. they can be measured on a graph

You should read up on aes.org. Hundreds of papers conducting thousands of trials with null results (i.e. people couldn't hear the difference). No papers confirming with confidence an audible difference between DACs, except I think one paper from the 1970s or 1960s evaluating first-gen CD players. Ergo we can conclude that no audible differences exist.

As others said, the DAC chip matters very little, it's the implementation. The Asus Xonar D2X and the Musical Fidelity M1 DAC have the same DAC chip but both sound very different.

No audiophile cares about the Galaxy S3, I can assure you. Any true "audiophile" wanting a mobile device would have a 3rd gen iPod Video. I owned an S3 and an iPhone 5 for about a week together, with harder to drive headphones, the Galaxy S3 just sounded like an old fashioned radio, so brittle and totally lacking anything low down. The iPhone isn't great, but it is far more acceptable on hard to drive cans. Even on easy to drive IEM's like my Shure SE425's the S3 was very... disconnected. Drums lacked texture, voices lacked direction, it just felt very cold, much like older Roksan amps. IT may have a good DAC chip in it, but it really doesn't have much else going for it in the sound department.

One of the best CD players you can buy (if you can find one) is the Sony SCD-X777ES. It's about 10 years old now, but the DAC section is so well done that although it uses older chips, it's still an incredible sounding machine. I actually prefer it to the dCS Puccini player, which had a good two hour listen to a few weeks ago.

Keep in mind that the power supply to the headphone section is probably the biggest decider of quality here. Given that Apple have so much experience with the iPod range, it doesn't surprise me that the iPhone fairs very well in this test.

320kbps MP3 is more than adequate. This is the kind of language and thinking that makes people loathe audiophiles. It's a file type that does the same thing just a different way with the same results, get over it.

Is that not only for devices running Android 4.1 or higher, which the International S3 isn't yet?
