Custom backplate questions

Thread Starter
Hey guys!

I'm toying with the idea of making a backplate for my HD7970, out of either 1mm clear or 1mm purple acrylic and somehow light it up.
To not make the whole plate light up like crazy, my plan is to cover it with some vinyl film, and then cut out some kind of simple design, so that design is lit up. I am sorry i do not have some sort of concept art to show you guys, but this is very much just in the "Is this possible"-stage.

So to recap in an orderly fashion:

Can one light up 1mm acrylic with some sort of SMD LED, and still make it look good.
What kind of washers would i need between the backplate and the PCB? Nylon? Rubber?

I look forward to hear yours guys' input, and if needed, i can try to make some concept art for ya, if my text does not surffice.

Thanks
Mcbeer

EDIT:
The reason i would like the 1mm acrylic would be so the backplate is not massive, and look like a BLOCK on top of the GFX smile.gif
