Storage Space system?

Thread Starter
Is it possible for me to build a small system that i can only use for hard drive storage space?

To where i can connect my laptop with either a usb or the ethernet cable and transfer from the storage system to my laptop (macbook pro)

Wondering if its worth doing that because im kinda tired of having to switch out hard drives all the time in order to find the right set of photos and getting screwed over from the catalogs i have made in different programs.

Thinking about just getting a cheap Dual Core Processor and a cheaper micro atx board maybe from biostar and enough ram for this im not looking for a gaming build at all just a system where its all about storage nothing else that is all...it will not be having the internet run to it other than for updates on the os if needed... and for program downloads to run this if needed...

Suggestions i have really no idea where to start because i do not want to go with external hard drives any more they are adding up quick and its not really worth it to keep getting them if i can go with one large system and keep adding drives to it and just building a cool little tower that has mucho amounts of drives..

I have all the time in the world for this one suggestions of course where to start would be awesome..

If needed to go server in order to do so i can do that

Take a look at the servers forum. You might get ideas there. 83TB NAS, anyone? wink.gif

Basically you want to make a file server. Assuming you already have a router, then even just a basic Windows PC that does nothing but have shared folders over LAN/WiFi will do just fine (it's all my fileserver is tongue.gif).

I`ve had a similar setup for a while. Not ideal.

Sure a FreeNAS setup is something that`s easy to setup, but even a PDC rig would be overkill for sharing files using that OS. Power consumption is a problem too, having a machine running 24/7 for the sole purpose of sharing files via SMB is not good for your electricity bill. If you want to do other stuff with it, like I was doing it for a while, fine. But otherwise, it`s too much hassle for too little advantages.

Get a NAS or USB or Thunderbolt RAID enclosure, but the drives in and call it a day. I went from my server setup to a RAID1 array in my main box, fast and much more energy efficient. I know it isn`t possible in your case, but the bottom line is to keep it simple.

Yeah if you have any old hardware you should use it, it doesnt take much for a file server.
Just make sure you get a chassis with enough HDD bays, The NZXT Source is pretty cheap and has 8 bays.
