Raid5 using X79 chipset?

Thread Starter
Hi,
I am considering a Raid 5 array using the on-board Raid controller on ASUS P9X79 deluxe motherboard, with four 1TB hard drive.
Will the performance be up to expectation? (close to 2x-3x the read/write speed of single drive?)
I have used Raid1 and Raid 0 but have never tried Raid 5 on a consumer board.

Thanks a lot,
-Fox

RAID 5 on motherboard "controllers" generally sucks. Write speed suffers terribly for the most part (can't speak of ALL boards, but generally). Reads however, will probably be up to your expectations.

Personally I'd recommend trying to find a used or middle-end RAID card, as that will offer a lot more flexibility and performance.
