He went to the convention where the phone was announced, so he had used it before. He's now doing a 30-day challenge (where he uses the phone for 30-days and gives his opinions on how his experience is with the phone during the 30 days; at the end he says whether he will keep using it as a primary device or go back to his other phone [which is the S3 which won the last 30 day challenge]

S Pen requires TouchWiz framework. So it is impossible to use a AOSP-based ROM and use the S Pen. You can flash a ROM that is based off TouchWiz framework and still has functionality of the pen. I personally wouldn't use the pen (in my opinion) but who knows, I can't judge unless I tried it.
