In a sense it IS Samsung's loss because now they're not selling phones to millions by not having a VZW phone.
Not really, more like the consumers are hurting. It's like saying, the iPhone isn't on T-Mobile. So people that are on T-Mobile will either,
A) Buy it unlocked and use it on T-Mobile but on EDGE... T-Mobile now has 1900 Spectrum but it is still undergoing so until then they will use 2G unless you live in Vegas.
B) Switch to another carrier.

If the Galaxy S4 came out right now and it wasn't on the Verizon network. I can assure you people would leave VZW to go to their competitors. Or even the next iPhone, if it wasn't on Verizon, people would go to another carrier or not upgrade and continue using their current iphone. Sure there will be people that will go to Android but the majority will probably stick.

I'm not here to discuss "what ifs" but we can definitely agree the consumer loses. Not samsung or verizon. Samsung is making enough profits as it is.

Another reason why I only stick to Nexus devices smile.gif ... so if development is a important thing for you, that is something to keep in mind.

I don't really like where Google is going with the Nexus. It is getting a little too Iphone like for my taste. Next LG nexus is suppose to have no sd card and no replaceable battery? Welcome to the world of iphones on a open platform.

Until Nexus devices learn what a microsd is I'm going to leave them alone. Not allowing us to remove the battery is adding insult to injury. Maybe the new nexus program that is rumored to be in development will do better as it will allow more devices to be nexus without the nexus name. I'm betting we aren't going to see much of this until the next I/O event.

I hope you realize how bad of an opinion that is.

That's like saying all the VZW customers would leave if the S3 were to come out and VZW didn't have it (guess, what that happened).

VZW customers aren't customers because of the phone. They're customers because of the network. It's the most expansive, reliable and fastest network in the US.

Phones are a 2ndary luxury..one most customers are willing to sacrifice by getting a slightly inferior phone for.

If the S4 were to come out right now. VZW customers wouldn't jump ship. Hasn't happened in the past, won't happen in the future.

VZW customers have to hope for a great phone.

You grossly underestimate VZW's grip on customers and how much control they have over phones on their network.

You severely underestimate their customers. The customer service of Verizon is rated as one of the worst in the industry. I have seen the market research groups data that proves it.

Oh yeah? People wouldn't leave a network that is overpriced for data. People who are "grandfathered" in with their unlimited data plan won't get to keep it upon next contract renewal.

Verizon and Nexus devices? Not so much the Nexus experience with slow updates, not to mention the lack of communication between the carrier and it's customers.

I'm pretty sure a phone manufacturer has more to offer to a phone carrier. People are willing to jump carriers, especially ones whom are so in love with their Galaxy S3 or whatever device. Some may stay, some will go.

But Verizons lock down of the bootloader is unacceptable.

I understand what your saying but at the end of the Samsung would lose sales. If verizon didn't have the iphone then apple would lose sales. This is what I didn't understand about Sprint when it comes to the Iphone. The deal they made should have never been made. Sprint could never recovery from such a deal with it's small sub base. They should have just told Apple to take that stick out of their behind and decide rather or not they want to make some money on their network instead of treating Apple like a god and offering them a huge sale promise for a network with such a small sub base.

And Verizon wouldn't? People wouldn't upgrade their phones then. T-Mobile doesn't have iPhones, people migrate to other carriers or use 2G with their service (or move to T-Mobile and wait for their 1900 to come up)

... Sprint and T-Mobile offer Unlimited Data. VZW does not. Loyality exists in some people for carriers, some don't. It's a two way street.
If VZW didn't get the Galaxy S4, VZW would take a huge hit. So would Samsung. But giving the carrier "no we're not going to lock the bootloader for your VZW; either take it unlocked bootloader or not a phone" is a stand. Apple doesn't have to do this because carriers have to sign a contract to offer their phone on their carrier and I'm sure somewhere in here is included. I don't think carriers have to approve of Apple's OTA of iOS versions. They're all unified.

Phone manufacturers have the same weight as their carriers. If they don't accept, then oh well.... they'll get their sales elsewhere. Profit is profit.

Unfortunately, you're grossly uninformed. People that renew their contracts get to keep whatever plan they were on before, including unlimited data.

I know because I had the opportunity to do the same with Verizon. I was with Verizon for half a decade or so.

Verizon pretty much charges the same for plans as AT&T but offer a better network. Much better LTE/4G coverage.

People that choose Verizon don't think about phones, trust me. They're thinking about coverage, reliability and speed. After that they're thinking about free calls to other in-network people.

The last thing MOST people are thinking about is phones. You have to realize you're in the minority when it comes to choosing a phone before a network.

VZW isn't the one hurting from denying contracts with phone manufacturers. It's the phone companies.

Also, I've had phones on VZW where the bootloader wasn't locked so..

I'm a firm believer that if the SGS4 came out but wasn't on Verizon, customers would be disappointed, but wouldn't switch carriers. They would get the next best thing.

No I am not uninformed. I read tech and mobile news on a daily basis. Users who are upgrading from a existing unlimited plan will NOT keep their plans and will be forced to change plans to upgrade their phones on a subsidized price.

Well, we will not be upgrading. We will take our business to sprint. I'm sure we won't be the only ones.

Same thing what I said earlier. Yes there are phones on Verizon in which the bootloader is not locked but the majority are and there are no official "unlockers" via manufacturers compared to HTC DEV / MOTO UNLOCK / etc. Verizon's Galaxy S3's bootloader is LOCKED due to Verizon's request, not because of Samsung. All other variants of the phone are unlocked. It is now unlocked because of a unsecure bootloader, but workarounds like that SHOULDN'T be like that and should be unlockable because we paid for the device. We can do whatever we want with it afterwards.

Take a look at DROID X where the bootloader was never fully unlocked. It was rootable, but not fully unlocked to Android's deepest levels. Get your facts straight next time, thanks.

The Galaxy line is just as strong as the iPhone brand (if not more), if it wasn't on Verizon then people WOULD switch (some may, some won't as I've repeated MULTIPLE times; im not saying EVERYBODY would switch, but a % of VZW consumers would switch.. this is something you're not understanding). The brand is strong enough that it has a influence on what carrier some people may stay on.

All that said, buy a phone unsubsidized and you can keep your unlimited data.

Or you can switch carriers. Either way, people aren't switching carriers for a phone.
