Just ordered the Death Adder Black edition to replace my broken Logitech G9. With my G9 I didn't need a mouse pad on my wood desk. Its kind of a shiny wood ply wood that is. Does the Death Adder need a mouse pad or will it work without one well for gaming?

Depends on the surface.
I have a wood surface that shows the grain and I have to use one. If I don't, it jitters the mouse on screen. That's just my experience, I don't know if it's the surface causing the issue or not. It just stopped after I threw a piece of paper under it.

the bottom of the mouse will drag, specially in cloth surfaces
i dont know if this is caused by the thin feets or the ''U'' shaped bottom, but some of them will have this right out of the box (mine has it)
dont be worried about, because it isnt something big, but you can easily notice. you can fix that with extra feets, or ptfe tape too
