Is it actually a problem to mix different modules of the same type?

Thread Starter
I am sure this is a stupid question. When I built my current rig almost 2 years ago, I bought this Vengeance kit, and also happened to receive a free 4gb module of the same type as part of a bundle with some other parts. I have been running them all together as 12GB for that whole time without any issues (at least that I could tell). I am now planning on picking up another 4GB module to use 16GB in quad-channel with my 3930k. Is this generally a bad idea, or will I be alright. Please help.

You should be fine, like you I have mixed and matched in the past with no issues.

Another Corsair stick might have the same part number but different version number using different ICs (clicky). Generally mixed sticks will run at auto or XMP settings but there's no guarantee, especially when overclocked. That's why manufacturers don't recommend it and always suggest you buy in kits.
