Voltage problem? Or CPU at its max?

Thread Starter
Not sure if this is a voltage issue or what the problem is, but I was able to get a great OC on my opty 146 @ 2.8GHz from 2.0GHz. But when I went for 2.9, rebooted after saving settings in bios, the only thing changed was FSB from 285 to 290, and once it got to the boot screen, the logo had extreemly bad picture quality and froze solid on the boot screen. I ended up having to do a CMOS reset via jumper to fix it. It didnt cause any permanent damage, but It wasnt a very nice thing to see... Any ideas?

bump up your voltage a little. when you get to a wall the opty's get power hungry

You may try a bigger divider on your RAM. Or looser timings, I'm not sure where your at with the RAM right now but start low. And I agree with mudd; from my own personal experience once you reach a wall with an Opty, you really need to start feeding it some serious volts!!

oh ok gotcha, yea my ram is definatly not the problem right now LOL think its running about 147MHz right now and tops out at 230 so its probably voltage
Ill give it 1 more shot and see what she does..

Ok yes that was it, the voltage. Does anyone know what the max voltage you should go on these opty's?

Currently at 2.9GHz @ 35* C idle and 1.45V

As long as you got yourself a good cooling system it shouldn't really harm your opty too much even at 1.5v.
In my country I saw people doing opty at 1.6v for the sake of benchmarking. Well, they use watercooling setups.. Some extreme users go for Nitro cooling.. so.. *shrugs*.. no comments about that.

By the way, 2.9Ghz at 1.45v isn't that bad at all if it's prime stable.

air max voltage i'd suggest is 1.55v if you have the top popped. 1.5v w/ good cooling. you should be able to hit 3 GHz @ 1.5v. chip temps aren't terrible, but they could be better

LOL well the 2.9 was nice to see... but far from stable.. she ran for about 5 mins just fine then rebooted. I imagine its probably something to do with voltage because it tops out at 1.45 volts in my bios. but thats ok, I just wanted to see if she could get close to 3.0 and she did lol but not stable so 2.8 is fine with me!

lol
Maybe you might wanna read some vmod guides?
Nah abit too risky. Well, the proc has quite abit of potential to hit 2.9Ghz though with higher voltage I believe.
