This is an EVEN ODDER situation. Any ideas as to why this is? I'm using Windows 8 RTM x64, btw.

Original OP:
Last I checked, I had ~33GB of free space on my SSD.

Today, I got a low remaining space warning and was shocked to find that I had a only ~100MB and watched as the free space on my SSD m4 128GB dropped to 0 bytes.

Let's get a few of the obvious things out of the way:
-My paging file is to 4.6GB, a size previously limited by me.
-My hiberfile is also limited (to 4.0GB).
-System restore is also limited to 3.57GB by me.

So the problem is neither of the above. What's peculiar is the following:
Yprvd.jpg

As you can see, WinDirStat reports a size of 64.3GB used (this includes the pagefile and hyberfile). Now, the total size of this drive shows up in Windows Explorer is 118GB. If we work out the math, 118GB - 64.3GB = 53.7GB of missing space; we can attribute some of that as not showing being various system type things, BUT there is still AT LEAST 33GB of missing space. It just literally went away overnight.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?[

Do you have any screen recording programs? One time I accidentally pressed the hotkey to start recording, my hard drive filled up pretty fast.

Nope, and as said in the OP, the sticking point here is the discrepancy between usage reported on WinDirStat, and actual remaining space.

SMART looks to be all green. No inherent drive problems visible from there at least.

Well that is bizarre, have you tried updating the firmware? (Not sure if this might solve it.) What size is the drive when it's reported in your BIOS? Have you tried plugging it into a different system?

Last time I saw something like this, someone ran chkdsk on their SSD with locate bad sectors enabled and half the SSD was marked as bad. I think the guy had to secure erase to recover space. Try running chkdsk on your drive with no administrator rights just to see what it's reporting in terms of bad sectors.
