How to get rid of fingerprints on Nickel plated copper/aluminum

Thread Starter
Like most of you, I fondled my heatsinks and now they have fingerprint and dark smudges on the nickel plated copper heatpipes and alunimum fins.

Rubbing alcohol won't get rid of the marks. How would I make the heatsink sparkle again?

It will probably strangle you to death, but Brasso works well as it doesn't leave streaks behind like alcohol. Cheers biggrin.gif

Vinegar works, if you don't have any ketchup also works if you let it sit for a few hours.

Ive used any copper polish cleaner I have around the house.

As long as I dont touch it after reassembly im good for a while.

Read the directions though as some cleaners want to be washed and rinsed off with water. Wouldnt be convinient if you dont want to disassemble.

If you have any mild jewerly cleaner that might work as well.

Hi, I used to work in the aerospace industry, fingerprints on nickel plate and gold plate are very difficult to remove. Always handle these surfaces with white cotton gloves. If the surface is available the finger prints are oil based, and can be removed by several means. I recommend a really good oil solvent. I use a brake cleaner spray which is fairly inexpensive and leaves no residue.

One of the brand sellers has a heatsink polish or brightener. Try Thermalright?
