Does more+faster ram really help on gaming?

I have a Toshiba laptop running the new AMD Trinity APU A10-4600M, now I added 6GB of DDR3 running at 1333, and compared to the stock 4GB 1600 ram I gained about ~11FPS a game (GTA IV huge difference), now I'm thinking of buying another 4GB (maybe an 8GB) DDR3 1600 ram to pair it with the original 4GB 1600 ram as a replacement from the 1333, would the performance be increased more than the 6GB 1333?

I noticed that the DDR3 1600 makes my GPU slightly faster:

GTA IV benchmark on 6GB 1333:
Code:

And with the 4GB 1600:
Code:

^Quality lowered

Now would the performance be increased? in not expecting a huge increase just a noticeable increase over the 1333, and If so what type of memory would you guys recommend?. I'm not a gamer (If I was I would have gotten a stronger laptop) I occasionally play games, I use more Photoshop, and Google Sketchup.

Also I'm currently running Catalyst 12.8 Drivers are there any other drivers that provide better performance?

For an APU, absolutely. The faster the RAM the better. The GPU in an APU shares RAM with the system just like an integrated graphics chip. Compared to the GDDR5 VRAM on your typical graphics card, the DDR3 system RAM we use is very slow and will bottleneck most IGP solutions.

If you can afford it, I'd recommend 1866MHz RAM like this.

Ok well in that case ill be adding more DDR3 1600 memory to my laptop, Is it true that the Trinity chips for laptops only support 1600 memory and not 1866?

Technically, only 1600MHz RAM is supported but I believe 1866MHz memory will work OK. You might have to do a bit of research about it. At the very worst, it would simply downclock it to 1600MHz.

That'll probably do fine. Just make sure to get a set that runs at CL9 or better (lower). Something like this would be good.

For a moment I was questioning how you gained FPS going from DDR3-1600 to DDR3-1333 on Trinity APU, then I remembered you added a 2GB DIMM to a 4GB DIMM - so you initially had a single channel 4GB DIMM setup. I don't know what kind of laptop vendor with knowledge of Trinity APU would use a single DIMM setup to horrendously bottleneck an A10 doh.gif

Your performance gain shows how bad the bottleneck was.  Your addition of a 2nd DIMM even at the lower 1333Mhz helped significantly because you were moving your system from a single channel setup to an interleaved dual channel setup (dual channel up to 4GB memory usage, single channel up to 6GB) - a HUGE benefit to start with, as APUs are very bandwidth heavy due to the CPU-GPU interconnect and throughput need. Moving to 2x4GB of DDR3-1600 should remove all bottlenecks (ensuring all memory is addressed in dual channel and enabling a speed that removes all bottlenecks) and be fully worth it. I reckon that when you're done, you'll gain more at the FPS.  Mobile A10 trinity should be supplied with a minimum dual channel DDR3-1600.

What's your laptop model? I think I'm going to create a sticky thread w/chart to outline the APU memory bottlenecks and outline which APU laptops will require upgrades to get full performance since the fact that some of them are shipping with single DIMM setups should be taken note of by all members....

^ This.

Further proof that to get the most out of Trinity, memory management should not be overlooked. Period.
