Okay, i think i have a solution.

If you're trying to move points that become hidden by the component you're trying to move to (like if the board your moving to Point B blocks your view of Point B when you get close), hit 'K' to turn on the 'hidden edges' and that will let you actually snap to edges that you can't see. They'll show up as dotted lines.





On another note, in a situation in your mockup, if you're trying to have the keyboard tray rest against that board on the left, if you select an endpoint on the keyboard tray that will be touching the face on the support to the left, get it moving along the axis (green or red) and then hold Shift. This will lock it to that single direction, and this will allow you to then click on the endpoint on the face you want it touching and it will stay on the direction and not actually snap to the endpoint, just line up with it.


The green dot is where my mouse cursor is, but the component I'm moving stays along the axis it was moving along when I started holding shift. Moving the cursor to that endpoint makes it line up with the endpoint along the direction it is moving instead of moving to the endpoint.

It's kinda hard to explain that one without pictures to show you, but once you try it out it becomes self-explanatory.

Also, Grouping may be easier than components, so you don't have to stop and name everything when you want to make a group of faces. It does the same thing as Components, but you can't save them like you do Components, so you can't just load up a set of groups between Sketchup files. However, you CAN use groups inside components. So in this case, you could create the desk, and the desk itself is the component, with every piece within the component being a group of faces.
