Recommend me a beginner's guide for coding?

Thread Starter
Hey OCN, I'm interested in dipping my toes into the water that is coding and programming, and I'm wondering if any of you guys know a decent guide of sorts that will help me learn the basics.
The reason I'm asking this is because I'm interested in taking a few Computer Science classes in college, and I'd rather have a background knowledge of the subject before I get into it. This may also help me decide whether I even want to take these classes to begin with.
I'm also curious as to how difficult coding is to learn if I'm to learn on my own, as opposed to attending a class.

Any suggestions, criticism, anything at all, please lend me your advice!
Thanks to everybody who lends me a hand here thumb.gif

EDIT: I should have specified which type of code, but that's also an issue as I don't know where to start, HTML 4 or 5, maybe C+ or C++?

First off all, what kind of programming language do you want to learn.

there are various languages... rolleyes.gif

I had just edited it a few seconds before your post tongue.gif

That's the thing, I'm not sure where to start. What's best for a beginner, or are they all just as difficult as the next? I was thinking maybe HTML or C++?

I find these to be helpful. The guy does a pretty good job of explaining things.

http://thenewboston.org/tutorials.php

I started with HTML, then VB and am now doing C++ and C#. I mostly took classes and used these to supplement my learning.

in case you don´t know already

you should learn basic math logic, like the formulas in excel, and learn to use operator and or + - / * ( ) and their order

i only learned pascal/delphi in college, nothing else, did not like it very much XD

Basic math logic as in arithmetic, like 2+2=4? headscratch.gif
And what is operator? When you state that I should learn addition, subtraction, division, multiplication and parentheses, you mean I should learn their order? PEMDAS?

I am not sure what s/he means by "basic math logic" but depending on applications, sometimes people's biggest trouble isn't the programming language but the math. For example, graphics uses a lot of vector/plane geometry math which ends up becoming things like matrix multiplication.

Learn a high level language like C++ or Java before application-specific languages like HTML.

I always recommend learning SQL as well.
Once again...

Okay, I understand then. Lots of formulas, which I was never all too great at, but that was because I thought I'd never use them again doh.gif
I could always re-learn them and make an attempt. Thanks for the heads-up though, I appreciate it guys smile.gif
