[Build Log] Project "Overkill" - Quad GeForce Titan's - Page 37

So Item 2 has just arrived from 3M,

This cable is a 3M Twin Axial PCI-Express 3.0 extender.

Now this cable is probably the most expensive cable I've ever bought and utilizes twin axial cabling as well as specialized EMI/RFI and heat shielding.

They retail anywhere from $80-160 depending on the retailer purchased from. (That doesn't even include shipping smile.gif)

I'm not sure if you guys are familiar with Twin Axial cabling technology (I wasn't until recently) but here is the wiki link.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twinaxial_cabling

TLDR twin axial cabling uses twin inner conductors instead of one and is one of the main reasons we have SATA3.

If you want to utilize true Enterprise and Super Computing grade 8x or 16x PCIEX 3.0 speeds using an extender then you need this cable.

Essentially you can run devices starting from 25cm's away from the pci-ex 3.0 port (all the way up to 1metre away) with 0 loss of speed or interference with the connection (just like if you plugged directly into the slot)

Why is this important? Why not just buy one of the $15 pci-ex extenders from ebay? Well if I answered that it would be ruining Item 3 now wouldn't it, but what can you think of that would require such a cable with so much bandwidth? smile.gif

If that wasn't enough of a hint of what I have planned, perhaps these are:

On to sound cards, here are lots more pics of the main board, I've tried to take as many closeups as possible of the components and O-amps so you audio types can see just what makes up the card

More pics will follow later today of the daughter board smile.gif

Edit Item 3 shipped today (Thursday US) via fedex international priority overnight priority and it is expected it will be here by Wednesday or Thursday Monday COB \o/), also depending on how Item 3 performs there may be a very expensive item 4 on the horizon.

That being said, will attempt to wrap the entire project up over the next week smile.gif

Edit two : Daughter board pics, As the daughter board primary handles optical and rca in, there is very little on the chip. I've also pictured the black link cable that links them both together.

Just so you can see the massive difference in onboard components between the ZxR and the Z/Zx, here are some shots of the old card I had.

Notice the lack of really anything on the board besides the sound core dsp (they like to call it a quad core sound card but that's just silly marketing nonsense).

PS. If I can't find friends or family that want the old card I'll probably give it away to someone in this thread (lucky person pays postage) - I will let you guys know early this week smile.gif

As for the rest of this weekend, going to swap out all the yellow/red wiring from the pci-ex and 24pin cables and reduce the length of the 24 pin cable by 15cm.

I'll take some before and after shots and you will see how much the cable color bleeds through and why this was necessary,

Then if there's time I'll drain the rig and start making the changes to the loops discussed a few posts up, and take pics of the progress.

Rig is looking really good! I'm interested to see what you are going to be using that PCIe riser for! thumb.gif

Jeffinslaw

Thanks Man,

Well i thought you guys would get a kick out of this document I had to sign (I've renamed the manufacturer and modified the order number.) before they would ship me the product.

This was on top of drivers license, credit card bill and bank letter and address, describing the products use, etc

It really shouldn't be this hard... smile.gif

What the hell are you buying/importing into the country that would require you to sign a form like that?
Are you importing like, Uranium or something to power your computer...

It's just an electronics part, I have had to fill out two of these, one for the 3m twin axial cable and the other for the yet to be seen item smile.gif
