Thats what I thought but he is just taking the input from the user and checking it. Weird.Its a complete program in itself.

Well I just dug through my history and turns out I did something similar to this way back in the day for a course exercise. I had to use structures and memory allocators so you likely you can't just use it, but you should get the idea...

When I run the program I'm running it like....
./a.out < eahsfkjahskf.txt

In that case you're not reading in a file at all, you're reading data in from the standard input. cin should do the job.

What's happening there is the command line shell is reading the file in and then passing it to your program as keyboard input rather than your program managing the file system operations. (much like how when you run a.out > output.txt the OS automatically creates and writes output.txt based on the content you print to screen in a.out)

Ahh sorry. I've spent very little time in pure C redface.gif

Is STDIN really just a file pointer? How would that work for piped data? eg

Standard input stream
The standard input stream is the default source of data for applications. In most systems, it is usually directed by default to the keyboard.

stdin can be used as an argument for any function that expects an input stream (FILE*) as one of its parameters, like fgets or fscanf.
