Could I buy my dad's $14.99 Windows 8 pro upgrade and use for myself?

Thread Starter
My dad just bought a new laptop and is eligible for the $14.99 Windows 8 pro upgrade. Now could I just take his key and use it for myself? Would that be a bad thing to do? And if it's not illegal couldn't I just download an iso and install Windows 8 with his key if he's not not gonna use it?

It would still be the same key, so unless he gives you that key and he gets another, then no.

It's legal unless you both use the key

I think the $15 upgrade might de-activate his windows 7 key.

Update to my earlier post which I deleted. If you have XP, Vista, or 7 on your computer and want to use his Upgrade and he doesn't, you can. I also just read that you don't need XP, Vista, or 7 key if you want to buy the $39.99 upgrade offer when 8 comes out. They will even allow you to buy that upgrade and install it on a Windows 8 Preview machine. That is pretty cool. So if you install their Preview right now and want to upgrade to a full Windows 8 at the end of the month, you can for $39.99, you don't need an XP or Vista or whatever key to do so. But that Windows 7 qualifying upgrade to 8 offer that your talking about, yes you can use it on your own computer but you need to have a valid key of your own, not your dad's 7 key because then his won't work...

Here is from the Microsoft site:

Upgrade Software

Each upgrade license will apply to only one PC and may only be installed on PCs with a valid base license to a qualifying operating system (i.e., Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista or Windows 7).

While the offer will be limited to eligible customers who purchase a qualified PC, the upgrade may be installed on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying operating system. Visit http://windows.com for information about Windows 8 minimum requirements. Customers should visit their PC manufacturer’s website for more information about how to upgrade their PC to Windows 8, including updated software and drivers.

Thanks for posting this because that saves me like $30 bucks. I know my dad won't want 8 because his computer is for work and he can barely work 7. 8 is wayyy too advanced for him so it looks like I will use it on my computer since I have my own Vista key. Thanks again!

It won't deactivate his key, but it will deactivate the Windows 8 upgrade if he installs it. You can only install on one computer.
