Can't decide headset choice, need input!

Hello!

I'm currently looking for a headset/phone that will suit me comfortably. After using the HD201s for about half a year, the audio quality has not disappointed me, but it's construction build has not impressed me (For such a cheap price, I suppose that's what you get.) My ears are in constant pain after even an hour of usage and the ear cup material is just not comfortable at all. The 201 is definitely a keeper, but maybe not for me. =/

While comfort is my main concern, I would still look forward to decent audio quality.
(As in sound quality isn't my main priority, but it would be nice if you guys can suggest one that does have good quality but doesn't have to be the best.)

I'm open to any headset/phone choices not over $70, It's possible for me to extend my budget, but because I'm looking forward to replace my old dell keyboard, it would be best that the headset/phone not go over $50. tongue.gif

To my previous thread, many great suggestions were given, like the Samson headset, Superlux, JVC, Audio Technica, Parasonic, etc. But I guess I wasn't specific about what I want the headset/phone to have mainly, which is comfort. (While still having a good sound quality, as mentioned before, just doesn't have to be a priority. It's not like I want a comfortable headset with fuzzy and static-y sound.. haha) Well, here I go.

Budget - Would like anything not going over $70 (Although max is 80, I'm gonna include the shipping.) Anything cheaper than $50 would make my day.
Music Taste - Probably rock, today's "popular" music, and occasionally dubstep. (I use Pandora so I don't specifically listen to certain kind of music.)
Perks- I'm not much of an audiophile, so I'm not an expert at understanding the bass balance or things like that, but something that has a little of everything would be nice.
What I am using it for - Primarily gaming, surfing YouTube videos, TeamSpeak 3, streams, listening on Pandora. Will be using it for my PC primarily.
Location - I'm in California, so probably most sites would not be a problem, (Not sure about eBay, because I have never ever made a purchase from there before. . .) I use primarily Amazon, occasionally NewEgg, but again, open to any website that is trustworthy and not scam websites.

After surfing the audio section, I know that almost all of you will suggest headphones + add-on mic over headsets. I'm open to both choices, but again comfort is what I really want. So if you have a headset w/ mic in mind to suggest that is comfortable, and the sound quality isn't the best but isn't terrible, feel free to say it. But I'm prettyyyy sure that headphones will be suggested to me haha.

[Note: I will probably even think about getting the JVC HARX 700 as it has the same ear cup material on the HD 201 which I dread, I'd prefer something that feels almost like leather and cool.. won't make my ears hot and fuzzy. frown.gif ]

Thanks forum!

Well I'm currently in the same boat as you looking for a new set. I can tell you right now that you don't want the Razer Carcharias. Soon to be replacing my SECOND set of them. The first set's left ear died due a short that was my fault from its cable getting caught under my chair. Now my second set is doing the same when its not been snagged or anything. The sound quality was good for just normal use but it seems the build quality on this set isn't worth the price. I'm interested myself in what others suggest.

On the contrary, leather makes your ears warm, not keeps them cool. The clamp force is ultimately what makes a headphone most uncomfortable.

I already gave you my opinion on what you should buy though, so I assume you're looking for other options.

AD500s would have been a possibility, but now you want dubstep as well and they won't do that.

If the Samson SR850s aren't comfortable for you, the Sennheiser HD448's are the headphones you should buy. Comfortable. Good Material. Build quality is good enough. SQ is good.

If you can't find a good price for these, the 428s and 438s offer more bass, slightly less clarity and are cheaper.

Hello! thanks for the input, a friend of mine actually told me that the Carcharias should be considered, and we'll find out for suggestions!

Hello Simca, I have read your in-depth recommendation and I cannot be more thankful. As for the ear cup material, I know, I know, I'm a n00b ;'c. So it's the force pushing the headphone in your ear to cause it to be warm? Just by feeling the material on the HD 201s, I do not like it :O. I don't know if that's the same for other Sennheiser headphones. and Dubstep isn't something that I listen to a lot, just occasionally XD. So I'm kinda tipsy with the 448s and 428. Maybe I'm just really picky. . . but regardless I will take it and put it on my list of headsets to consider.

If the clamp force of the headphone is the prime factor in making my ears hurt, then maybe I might reconsider the ear cup material on the 201s.. just that when I feel it, I hate how it feels. T_T

Clamp force literally hurts your ears. It puts pressure on them. No one really likes that. The material usually isn't a comfort factor, more of a temperature comfort thing. Leather warms the ear, but is also good for bass. It's comfortable, but not for too long.

Fake leather just feels cheap and crappy.

The material on the HD448's are good. It's hard to describe what it is.

Once at Frys or Best Buy, (I forgot which) but I tried on the BOSE QuietComfort 15, I believe... my god, that headset was so comfortable.. Don't know if it's the clamp force or ear cup material, but I loved it. The ear cup material felt like the soft leather couches, althought I'm not sure if it's leather, it felt so soft and cool. Any idea what that type of ear cup material is? I've been searching for a headset with those ear cups... tonguesmiley.gif While the 201s feel like plastic-y, rough, and wrinkly .

Image-wise the 448s look like the same rough wrinkly material on the 201s, but maybe more padding? (Again, not the expert at this.. please forgive me.)

I think it's called Leatherette.

Worst case scenario, the HD428/38/48 all have replacements pads even sold by Sennheiser...even in Velour.
