Need some clarification on 64 bit programs and installations

Hey guys, this is something that has been bugging me for a while now, I'm not sure if this is the right section for this thread but I'm sure someone will tell me if it's not. I'm interested in how you get 64 versions of programs to download. More specifically, I want to know if websites detect the version of your browser and give you the corresponding version, or if they detect it another way. I know that it varies from sites and in some cases you have to manually choose your version. It just annoys me to look at my program files and find that 32 bit (x86 is 32 bit, right?) has nearly 200gb worth while program files only has 1.6gb >.>

I do also have some unusual circumstances in that I run a SSD, and I'm not sure if I have set it up correctly, I had to fiddle with the registry to point installations to D:/ by default.

Not all programs have a 64-bit version available.

A website can immediately discover your IP address, what web browser and what OS you are using, in addition to who your ISP is, your general location, your screen resolution, your version of Flash and so on.

So sometimes, a website will automatically direct you to the 64-bit installer/download based on those readings. Other times, the software developer will program both 32 and 64-bit versions into one installer, which will automatically determine and install the appropriate version when you run it.

And yes, x86 is 32-bit and x64 is 64-bit.

Programmers are fat and lazy, we've been using 64 bit CPU's for a long time, yet only some memory intensive programs are running native (Photoshop, World of Warcraft as of 5.0 release, I believe Office has a version now).

I've complained about it, and people just say "Oh you don't need XXX to be 64-bit", so I gave up.

It is important for driver sites to detect your version of windows, being 32 and 64bit versions aren't interchangeable.

Windows uses that WoW64 to run 32bit pretty much at the same speed, so they it just enables programmers to not be forced to make the changes.

I agree, too many programs are still only 32-bit, but a lot of the time that's the fault of the company that the programmers work for. In addition to the increased complexity and cost to develop, the performance difference is very little (in some programs) and a surprising number of PCs and devices are still running 32-bit operating systems.

If you (or the OP) haven't heard of this site, visit it if you get bored sometime. It's a site that catalogs anything 64-bit: http://www.start64.com/

Thanks for that, my main reason for asking this was to make sure that it's detection wasn't solely based on the browser (chrome, which doesn't have a 64 bit version. Surprising considering the amount of ram it uses).

well... that's the point. Most programs are not that memory intensive or gain much from 64-bit processing.... so why bother?

It is actually quite easy to recompile source code targeted for 64-bit. However, the developer will have to regression test and that takes time (money).

Programs that do leverage 64-bit are most likely already 64-bit.
