AthlonXp 1800+ or P4 1800

My son has the rig in my sig. He likes to play some games and he likes to surf the net. Which of the 2 rigs would be better?

I of course am keeping the Nvidia 5500 no matter which rig I use, i'm just wondering processors.

I am going to sale the other (probably the P4) and here are some stats/shots.

With a PS2 keyboard/mouse and a cheapo 14 (or 15") monitor how much can I get out of this:

P4 1.8
256 RAM (I might have another 256 around not sure)
Maxtor 40 gig hd
Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 200 (*how can i find out how much onboard memory?*)
CDROM
1.44 floppy
ps/2 keyboard & mouse
3 com 10/100 pci ethernet adapter (broadband)

you aren't going to get much.

I'd say =<$150 or so.

The Athlon XP 1800+ most definitely. At it's time, it beat/matched 2.0Ghz P4's!
Plus more RAM...

The P4 can probably be sold for ~$125 on Ebay

I doubt you'll get much for that system, considering that it is several generations old. You might want to consider turning it into a media center for the living room instead and make good use of the comp instead.

That Athlon system is better than the Intel system. I agree though, you won't get much for either. I also agree that you should load Linux on it and stick with your home stereo.
use that p4 for experimenting w/ other systems or win2k3 server or something. it won't be worth the time to sell it...

and the XP 1800+ is better

I know the XP 1800 + has more memory loaded and such, also it has a motherboard that will let me OC (very little, I have alot of heat issues turning up the XP's)

Whichever PC I was going to let him have as primary, I was going to strip the RAM and GEForce 5500 and the other things out and put it with that mb/cpu.

OK I agree if I sale it for more than $125 to $150 i'd be ripping someone off, so how can I turn it into a media center like you suggested?

So basically I was asking which mb/cpu was a better choice.
The better board and cpu is the Athlon especially for games.

To make a media centre pc hardware needed is:
For tv and radio you'll need a tv card,
However for sound you just need a 3.5 mm jack to twin rca to connect to your stereo or a decent set of computer speakers.

Software you could use the media portal (Free) media centre software.
http://www.team-mediaportal.com/ Or you could buy a copy of windows xp media centre edition

Also you could get a compatible remote control.
There are other free media centre softwares, more than likely anyway, but i have used this and know that it works good

You might also think about getting a low end vid card that has s-video out so you can connect it to your TV. As smallia16 said, you'll need the 3.5mm jack to rca to connect the sound from the computer to the TV. Radioshack sells those for like 3 bucks. As for TV cards, depending on what you want and on your budget, they range from $40 to a couple hundred. Check out Hauppauge. They make a wide range of cards. I have one from Leadtek - the PVR2000. The lower end cards generally allow you to only watch TV, but the nicer ones allow you to record TV, just like a Tivo. I ended up needing to get a bigger HD because I started recording everything, not that I will necessarily go back to watch the shows, but just because I can! Let me know if you have any other Q's.
