GTX 460 SLi vs GTX 660 upgrade ?

Hi all.
I have another PC which I used to use as media center, but now it's used for gaming again albeit "not heavy gaming", since it's my girlfriend who primarily will use it for some of her games (Morrowind Elder Scrolls, Skyrim, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 just to name a few).

It currently has 2x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OverClocked 1GB Edition in 2-way-SLi but I've been thinking of replacing these with a single MSI GTX 660 TwinFrozr OC 2GB card which is fairly reasonable priced.
Would this be a sensible "upgrade" both performance wise but also thinking about power consumption (I'd like to keep it moderate). ?

The specs of the PC is:
Fractal Design Define R3 Arctic White case
Asus M4N82 Deluxe, BIOS 2101
4x2GB Crucial BallistiX PC6400 CL4
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition @ OC 3.6GHz
Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer
Cooler Master GX750 PSU
Seagate Barracuda 12 500GB SATAIII
Samsung DVD-RW (SH223 something) -
4x120mm case fans

Only if you could bump it up to a 660Ti it would be worth it, unless your finding yourself vRam starved.

A GTX 660 Ti would be a more appropriate card as an upgrade. it will match or exceed GTX 460 SLI while drawing much less power and run very quiet. with GTX 660 you are looking at a downgrade when compared to GTX 460 SLI.

a used GTX 460 card can sell for about 90-100 bucks. so you need to spend only 100 - 120 bucks extra after selling your GTX 460s. For the benefits a single GPU provides its worth it.

I had a look at this review at Anandtech http://www.anandtech.com/show/6276/nvidia-geforce-gtx-660-review-gk106-rounds-out-the-kepler-family/12 and the GTX 660 doesn't seem far from the GTX 660Ti.

I had thought of GTX 660Ti but the problem is that it's still around $400 in Denmark and a GTX670 is $475.

The MSI GTX 660 TwinFrozr OC 2GB is the cheapest GTX 660 around here for $281. The GTX 660Ti is $120 more expensive. mad.gif

With a bit of luck I can get $175 for both GTX 460 sold together.

the GTX 660 is also severely restricted with regards to power target . this affects overclocking headroom. Since GTX 660 comes with one PCI-E 6 pin power connector i think Nvidia is playing it safe with regards to chip TDP and max board power design.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/09/19/asus_geforce_gtx_660_directcu_ii_overclocking_review/

"In the screenshot above we are showing the maximum Power Target the GTX 660 allows, 10% (110 on the slider over 100) from the base. This is by far the lowest Power Target percentage of any Kepler generation GPU to date. On the higher-end GK104 GPUs the Power Target can be set to +20% and here we are only able to set +10%. We already explained above that at 1084MHz it is operating 5% above the Boost clock, already eating up some of our Power Target room. With only +10% Power Target, we aren't going to have the power needed to allow stable high overclocks, and our tests proved that. We have data that outlines all this."

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/09/19/asus_geforce_gtx_660_directcu_ii_overclocking_review/5

"The GTX 660 is not an overclocker’s GPU. It isn't the fault of ASUS however. It is the NVIDIA specified strict limit to the Power Target that is keeping us from achieving good overclocks. If some manufacturer were to come out with a custom GTX 660 that is able to provide us a higher Power Target, we could see some great overclocks out of this GPU. Unfortunately this kind of thing is frowned upon this generation by NVIDIA. NVIDIA is being very strict on the TDP, Power Target, and overvoltage with the Kepler generation. Perhaps NVIDIA is trying to keep RMAs and support calls down compared to the last couple of generations or perhaps going to greater lengths to stratify its product stack? The point is, for us enthusiast overclockers the GTX 660 is one of the most strictly capped GPU generations to date when it comes to overclocking abilities. "

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/09/19/asus_geforce_gtx_660_directcu_ii_overclocking_review/3
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/09/17/asus_geforce_gtx_660_ti_directcu_ii_top_review/5

1920 X 1080 Ultra 4X MSAA

GTX 660 OC (1150 Mhz) - avg 49.6 min 31 fps
GTX 660 Ti OC (1382 Mhz) - avg 65.4 min 33 fps

think about it and decide. Also would you consider HD 7870 or is it only Nvidia GPU that you prefer. HD 7870 is faster at stock wrt GTX 660. HD 7870 scales better with overclocking because of a full 256 bit memory system with 32 ROPs compared to GTX 660 with 192 bit memory and 24 ROPs.

Hmm I see the "issue" regarding to overclocking, but since an interest is keeping the wattage use quite moderate it's not af any real concern.

However I'm starting to think if I'd be better of just getting 2nd hand GTX 580 (should have kept one of the 3 I sold...oh the hind sight).

I'm not going to run AMD cards on this motherboard since it's Nforce 980a. - not that if would give any issue, but still... having a SLi option is nice.

You need a very good PSU to run a GTX 580W. a high quality seasonic or corsair 550W PSU with atleast 40A or more on +12v rail. also your concern of a cooler running setup will not be completely addressed. So its either GTX 660 Ti or a slight downgrade from your current setup (2 x GTX 460) to a GTX 660.

Yea. I had a GTX 580 running on the CM GX750 flawlessly for testing purposes way back. I have to consider what approach to take. Get a little performance penalty but gain 2GB vram that still ups some performance and get less power consumption with GTX 660.

I'd really like a GTX 660Ti, but it's just out of the price range... Hmm could be I should let the GTX 460's run through 2012.

I found this test/comparision. Okay it's a single GTX 460 vs GTX 660, but the GTX 660 is nearly double the performance, and much faster overall. So in a perfect SLi scenario with 90% scaling the GTX 460 would match the GTX 660,, but as SLi isn't always 90% scaling the single GTX 660 may overall actually be not such a bad idea.... or what ??rolleyes.gif

Yeah keeping the GTX 460s for another 6 months is a good idea. You can expect the HD 8000 and GTX 700 series launch in Q1 2013. the GTX 780 based on the GK110 would be the new flagship at USD 500 - 550. the GTX 680 will take its place as the GTX 760 Ti at USD 300 and the GTX 670 will be the new GTX 760 at USD 250. that would be an awesome upgrade to the GTX 460s in SLI. thumb.gif
