Computer doesn't recognize new external hard drive? - Page 2

Can you hook the drive up to an IDE cable in the comp to format it and then put it back in the external USB?

Well the computer says in the hardware thing in systray that a "G Drive" is connected, but that's the only place it says so.
Can you post a screen shot of this?

I can (try) and do all three, but I've got to go out for half an hour... When I get back I'll try all three, though I have no experience at all with installing HDDs.

That's the Fdisk error, but I couldn't get a screen for the device manager...for some reason I can't even get that to work anymore. Maybe it never worked in the first place and I was just confusing it with something else, though.

I guess I'll try to do the whole hook up to comp thing. Wish me luck

Hmm plugging it into my computer doesn't seem to do anything, either. Or maybe I did it wrong. I found a plug that looks like this , but that's the only thing I plugged in. Am I missing something?

That looks like the right cable. Did you plug in the power connector? (have to ask ) Also, try downloading a 3rd party partition utility as suggested before and see if you can find it that way. What's on the drive? Also, make sure that hte jumper is set to master and not slave etc... I don't know if that makes a difference but it's worth a try.

Yeah I just went back and made sure that the power and that cable thing were connected right...they are, so it should work but nothing shows up. How do I get a third party partition utility? I'll try to google one, but. And I'm not quite sure how to set the jumper to master and not slave. I don't even know what a jumper is.

And the HDD has nothing important to me on it. If I get it to work I'll just end up wiping the entire thing right away anyways.

Let me make sure that I have all this right.
1. Drive is a Maxtor 80Gb from your old computer-the drive worked in the old comp so it is already formatted- Question: Was it the same Operating System?
2. Power is going to the external case b/c you can hear it and the LED lights up
3. The Plug n Play USB is recognized b/c you hear the sound - so it is not a bad USB cable
4. You tried a separate laptop drive and enclosure and that was recognized and assigned a letter
5. When you enter the Disk Management there is no drive there to assign a letter to
6. You tried the problematic drive and enclosure on another comp and it was not recognized and the Fdisk error persisted - keep in mind, when you format the drive any data on it will be erased.
7. When you reboot sometime is goes to a blank screen and does nothing - As I was typing this I thought of a problem that I had with my USB printer. The printer would not work and I would get BSOD and/or boot errors like the black screen. For some reason when I plugged it into the USB expansion card in one of the PCI slots it would not work. I plugged it into the USB port that was directly on the motherboard and everything has been working flawlessly.
8. That looks like the right cable - did you check the connections inside the enclosure to make sure there are no loose HD and power cables?

The jumper should be next to the IDE cable that you showed a pic of. You should see some pins and a small black plastic piece over 2 of them. That is the jumper. On the top or bottom of the drive or even next to the jumpers you should see a diagram telling you where to put the jumper to make it master etc... Try this piece of software. It works well as I have used for my portable hdd. You said that the icon in the system tray says you can removed the G drive and that's the only place it shows up right? This program should allow you to see it no matter how the hdd is formated and let you partition and format it.
