Pretending like subfees get you content or "protection from children" is pretty wrong too, and any quick look at WoW's patches (or swtor LOLOLOL) and the average chat is about all you need to prove that.

False. I love games with subscription fees. Free games nickel and dime you for all sorts of little crap, and I can't stand that. Microtransaction games cost more to play in the long run, and they tend to require more grinding since grind mechanics generate more in-game sales. I want a well designed and polished game that I can pay a flat monthly fee for. I don't want the gameplay ruined by sales-driven mechanics.

This, I'd much rather a subscription than the F2P junk we get.

i don't think subscription fees are necessarily bad. but i think wow has sucked since wotlk and this new expansion just makes it worse. it's too accessible (basically too boring for non-hardcore raiders) and the world/story suck now imo.

Pandaria launched in China on october 3rd and its numbers aren't included in these numbers. Lot of people forget or didn't realize that before Cata launched, that the subs had already increased by 1-2 million into the 11/12 million in the prior months leading up to cata launch because Wrath of the Lich King launched in China. Either way though, it appears that Wow has peaked which is fine its a very old game.

Anyway I wish them the best of luck, I quit over a year and will never go back. I don't have any hard feelings, I am just done with the game, it was very fun while it lasted. At first I thought it was just WoW but I think I am burned out in the genre, as I quickly grew bored of Swtor and GW2. I guess i'll take a look again once titan rolls around to if it actually doing something new.

Well im back playing - and i was very unsure about buying it. i must say im really enjoying it. Its no Burning Crusade by any stretch but its much better than Cata at release.

If I had to choose between a free, grind based, pay to win game with all the goodies tucked away in the cash shop, and a subscription game with none of that, I would prefer the subscription game too. I agree.

The point I am trying to make is that we shouldn't have to make this decision between two bad options. Nobody should have to buy a game expecting and fully willing to spend a significant amount more money just to keep their access to the game. That is a load a crap. ONLY MMO's get away with this for some reason. Heck, some MMO's sell the game, sell the expansions, charge a monthly fee, AND have a cash shop AND still nickel and dime you with crappy grind based RNG mechanics. Why is locking people out of raid content for a week at a time acceptable in a game where you have to pay for playtime? That mechanic serves no purpose except to stop people from flying through an entire expansions raid content in 12 hours and unsubbing.

Every other genre on the face of the earth sells you the game and then you can keep it and play it forever. If you want some extra stories or shiny weapons, a few dollars gets you some very optional DLC. No monthly fees, no gameplay crippling cash shops. MMO's used to be an exception because of hardware/bandwidth costs and small playerbase, but that is no longer the case. NCsoft's server costs for their websites, all of their games, and EVERYTHING they do with servers comes to a grand total of an asterisk footnote at the very bottom of their earnings report. Paying a subfee is just literally handing over money for nothing. MMO’s keep them around because people still EXPECT MMO’s to have some sort of crappy “feature” like this and are willing to pay them.

I simply found cataclysm extraordinarily boring. It took itself soooo dreadfully serious. Pandaria is just a lot more fun.

The reason there are sub fees/cash shops is the basis of the game. It isn't so much having to pay for hardware costs and what not, but more so having to pay for support. GMs, phone/email support, etc are people that need to get paid, and there are a large number of them. If Blizzard simply sold the game and made the money, by the time the next expansion came out they would more than likely be at a loss. When you compare a shooter to an mmo, there are similarities and differences. Both have servers and bandwith costs to support, but mmos have a large player base that needs to be, for lacking of a better term, supported.

I was against F2P games for a long time. I have come to love them in the last year. If a game is pay to win where i can buy extra stats and what not that model is terrible. I was playing world of tanks and they have a cash shop but nothing really affects the outcome of the matches from the cash shop. GW2 is another good model F2P i have yet to dump any money into the game. I will at some point buy extra bag slots and bank slots but its my choice. I also dont feel the need to spend every free moment on a game when i dont have a sub fee.
