Okay, so I'm sure you guys get tired of this kind of thread but I really feel the time is right for me to get a decent camera. I'd like a DSLR and was thinking something cheap like the D3100 or the Rebel T3. Would these be sufficient for casual noob photography? I really want to get some good shots of my rig and need to get decent video as well for my Youtube channel.

Also do any of you have any quick and dirty manual settings and/or lighting suggestions for shooting a computer inside? I know absolutely nothing and would very much appreciate any info/advice you may have. I know I can always count of OCN for good advice even when its not about computers! thumb.gif

Right now I'm casing the x10+ optical zoom and 1080p video cameras from Sony, Samsung, Olympus or Nokia and the first one that can provide it at $150 with tax (they are close) will get my money.

I bought a DSLR camera in that price range and what's funny is that I find myself rather using my Canon small form factor for most situations.

So I learned from this and could kick myself for wasting all that money. Now when I want to take a quick picture to share with OCN, if I’m going out for a visit or on vacation and when I want to record a quick video, rather than opting for something bulky, I grab my Canon of which I want to upgrade to the latest tech. Food for thought.

Video on the 3100 is meh.

I'd recommend a used D5100 or 3200/ or from the Canon side a t2i/t3i.

Or even the D3200...which suffers at high iso but video quality vs the 3100 is much improved.

T2i/D5100. exactly what average camera user needs. anything more than that is specialized honestly.

as far as down and dirty lighting/manual settings. learn the camera before jumping right into manual mode unless you have previous photography experience. in video mode set your shutter speed to 1/60 is shooting HD at 24 or 30 fps. if you are shooting in 720 60fps if those cameras have it, cant remember, then set shutter speed to 1/125. for lighting i suggest reading online about lighting and understanding why off camera lighting makes for a better image and about fill versus key lighting. and then just go get some cheap desk lamps at home depot if you are mainly shooting pictures of your computer

Most Youtube "tutorials" are heavily opinionated trash. FWIW, anyway. The stickies here are enough to get you up and running, but observing the work of the greats and practicing is the way to go -- but rather than shooting until you get an acceptable result, plan your shot and then objectively assess (if the result is not what you desired) what adjustments need to be made. Learn your metering modes and when to use them.
