Nikon J1 or.......

Thread Starter
I'm thinking about picking up a camera but most reviews I see are always mixed.
The J1 has my eye mainly due to looks but ofcourse that means nothing.
I plan on using it for outdoor pics, pics of my rig, in door shots in a club etc. Also would like it kinda compact and would wanna spend around 500. Less if possible any help would be great! Also my first post! Thanks again!
Compact for 500? Maybe a used X10, or if they're available for that much, an RX100 (better choice for sensor size, but slower lens). The 1-series blows, avoid unless it's your only option.

I just looked up the Sony one you mentioned and it def looks solid! They're asking around 650 on
the net though kinda high but def an option. Thanks for the feedback sir.
No problem. The Sony has the same size sensor as the 1-series (1"), and as I recall, it's quite a bit better. it's also WAY more pocketable. You lose the ability to change lenses, but with that lens on the RX I would say it's a non-issue for most people.

What would make my day is if i could find out EXACTLY what camera alot of people use to take pics of their rigs, i mean they come out sharp and commercial looking. It aggravates me to not know simply which camera is great and which is horrible.
For instance what camera took this photo - http://cache.megatechnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/NZXT_Switch_810_Full_Tower_09.jpg

If i know a camera takes a photo like that i would get it without a doubt.

It doesn't matter what camera was used, the results will be more on the photographer than the camera. That RX100 is plenty for what you want, you'll have to spend some time learning lighting techniques and camera settings to get the results you like.

you realize that blue thing in the second image is photoshopped in right?

honestly the image overall is not that exciting for my taste. but in order to take photos like that you need to take the time to learn about lighting and understand what it takes to make an image have the look you desired. as sub said its more about technique than the camera itself. for a shot like that as far as web viewing is concerned most cameras will produce almost the exact same image with slight variations

Correct.

The 1 series Nikon isn't bad, but it's just ovepriced for what it is. The main advantage is interchangeable lenses.

If you want something cheap, good image quality and interchangeable lenses. Then take a look at the Olympus E-PL1. It's $200 with a lens at Cameta.com. The sensor is slightly bigger than the J1 or RX100.

Read up some guides, get to know the camera and you will achieve much better results.

+1 aksthem1 - its not really about the camera you use. lighting and editing has more to do with it. The camera they used was a Nikon d60, pretty old entry level camera. (4-5 years old)
