Could Support For Piledriver Core FX CPU's Be Added To A BIOS That Supports Bulldozer? - Page 2

Thread Starter
Though i read somewhere on XS that ASRock had PD support in a new BIOS for some of their 890xx boards so that does kind of stink imho ASRock are what i would call a "low tier" MoBo manufacturer if they can make it happen why can't ASUS!. I think the same as you my X6 was fast enough so Bulldozer would have best without a GOOD OC been a draw. So Piledriver would have been a better thing to support the PD is just a "polished" BD so i can't see how it would NOT work.

Like you i can't justify replacing a MoBo for a 1055T@4.1Ghz > 8320FX. BUT i could easy go for just a CPU swap. I think it's more DON'T WANT to than CAN'T support PD on 890xx chipsets and if so it stinks imho. If i had to i possibly would think about Intel imho (and i've been AMD since 1Ghz Athlon Socket A!!).

Thanx.

See what i mean (all the PD chips are supported! just got the screenshot for the 8320). Fair play to ASRock obviously value their customers:rolleyes:.

Someone shud give it a try for greater good, even asus said u can try smile.gif

I mean i know that many didnt even need a bios update when they changed from BD to PD, it just worked with the previous BD bios. So its not completely out of the question.

I'm in the process of Emailing ASUS - asking for the AGESA codes to be put into a bios. There has to be some hardware wiz who is interested over at ASUS in getting this to work! I encourage everyone to do the same - let's NAG them!
I'll make y'all a deal....if y'all order a PD chip, and it doesn't work, I'll trade your for my BD chip OR sell/trade you my mobo. After BD (and despite PD's mild boost), I've been looking at LGA1155, anyway.

Even though it would be theoretically possible to extract up microcode from one bios and patch another with it I wouldn't want to try it on my board and putting in a PD CPU in an unsupported board will give you nothing but bsods!

If you want reach out to bios modders. There are several sites that cater to these special requests.
I may look into it for my Crosshair IV formula which just came out with a new bios last week despite no PD support! (I could be wrong but their cpu compatibily chart makes no mention of PD).

Thanks Asus!

Good luck!

I think this would be great for sales as i'm sure im not the only one with what i would call a good performing MoBo and can't justify a new one imho BUT i would be happy to go for a PD if it was compatible. If ASRock can i can't see any reason that ASUS other than they have lots of 990xx MoBo's to shift. If someone has any idea where it would be best to ask for such BIOS mods i'm all ears it's just not something that i feel upto trying myself (though if one was available i would give it a whirl)........ Just not sure i would buy a PD just on the "off chance".

I can't see any "hardware" reason why it wouldn't work as 890xx > 990xx isn't much chip wise i beleave and PD > BD isn't more than a spit shine imho (a good one none the less:D). And i'm doing a lot of encoding and feel MOAR cores would be nice:D. Just i don't think the 890xx > 990xx is enough to warrant a new MoBo at least in my case.

Thanx.

You ask and here is your answer.
Native DDR3 1866 and it works without problems. Yes a FX-8320 on an Asus M4A89TD Pro. I installed Windows 7 and the drivers just fine. I'm 99.99% postive that it will work on on any Asus 890X/890FX mobo.

Great job:thumb:........ Good mind to send it to the AMD guy who said it would be a shame to risk busting a PD processor in an incompatible MoBo. That's great for us 8 Series chipset MoBo's now makes it VERY likely i will be getting a PD somewhere in the future WOOP WOOP:D!!

Thanx.

i have 2 Gigabyte mobos that would be great candidates - 890FXA-UD7 and a 890FXA-UD5 both pretty good boards - one has been replaced with a Sabertooth 990 FX and the other by a Gigabyte 990FXA-ud5 the performance difference between an 890FX and a 990FX is approximately NIL !
I hope they either do a bios update or someone in the bios hacking circles does a hacked bios .
