That's correct. 1 platter or 4 makes no difference. Only one side of one platter is ever accessed at once.
Mind you, if you have 4x the space, it does shift everything closer towards the edge of the platters. (900GB in is 90% across a 1TB drive, but only 22.5% across a 4TB drive - smaller/quicker/quieter seeks!)
Platter density can really boost a drive's sequential speeds. RPM helps too. High sequential speeds have a positive effect on performance, as long as access times don't suffer. The highest platter density available may have higher access times initially, while they figure out the best way to seek accurately. That's why they usually roll them out in Green (lower RPM) drives first.Edited by Kramy - 10/5/12 at 3:25am
