[GI] WoW designer: Single player games are dying

Game developers in today's market are being challenged to find ways to avoid seeing their titles in bargain bins at retail. Having a long tail is an important factor in any game's success, but big budget single player titles definitely are running into trouble. Blizzard's Rob Pardo, executive vice president of game design and lead designer on World of Warcraft, doesn't think single player games can survive.

Speaking to GamesIndustry International in an in-depth interview, Pardo agreed that single player has become an "endangered species" that probably won't last much longer. "I don't see there being a great business model for it these days. It's really sad, there's just a lot of elements out there that conspire to make those games difficult to make now," he told us. "Between pirating or the ability for people to rent games, it's hard for publishers to pour millions and millions of dollars into a game and not necessarily see the return they need to make those budgets realistic."

I must say, I almost always only play multiplayer games. The only time I ever play single player games is when my cable is out lol. I just get bored really fast when I'm not playing with other people.

Call me old school, but I'm a single player guy. I do the occasional multiplayer now and then, but a good single player game is always good.
I prefer quite a lot more singleplayer, for the different story, experience, gameplay mechanics etc etc. I can play occasionaly a quick match in TF2 or LoL, or something like that... but I generally dislike online gaming, because I spent too much time on a game that way, same game... with after X hours (usually not that much) pretty much same thing over and over again, only factor that might keep one is the social factor. That's it.

I'd rather play Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Skyrim, Jade Empire, Witcher, Knights of the old Republic etc.... then spend the same ammount of time playing an MMO of such quality.

And if this is the case, then the void indie games currently fill will continue to expand, and they will see even more success in the future.

gg "AAA" devs.

Easy for someone who only programs MMORPG's to say.

Single player will never die, because when it all comes down, we are all alone.

He's right, But for most of it i believe it's due to games just being plain lousy. GTA IV and the like gives me te same satisfaction as implementing carmageddon pickups in real life, "to hell with all realism, let's just make em stupid and call it realism"

AAA productions is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, sure publishers might call em that but in all honesty they're just rehashes. Think of Bethesda who hasn't published a new game since Oblivion, skinpacks and quest packs sure.

Mods are the way the to the future, I'm firm on that. Baldurs Gate, Fallout 1-2 (not expeditions into turdland) Jagged Alliance are all kept alive, easy concepts such as roller coaster tycoon still works. The graphics of the latter might be outdated. The graphics of the other ones just needs some high res texture packs.

All that boils into the fact that instead of making games good on their own publishers rely on gamers to make em good for eachother, and whoa look how that turns out in the real world... bunch a sideways parking, shopping cart blocking non considerate myselfs all of them

This, I tend to find mp really boring. Single player, a story heavy game is where it's at to me.

If they ever die, I'll play them on handhelds or similar.

Totally agree. This isn't about trends, its about storytelling. Single player games are simply an extension of the age old art of story telling. As mentioned above aswell, A WoW designer hardly has an impartial view of it all. Subscription MMOs dying out however.......that might be something he should be concerned about wink.gif
