140.3 vs 120.4?

post #1 of 20

I'm about to move out of my 600T case (Woefully inadequate once I started water cooling) and am going to be getting another radiator. Most likely going to a TJ07 but haven't completely made up my mind. Slightly torn between the beautiful looks of the TJ07, and the immense practicality of the Merlin SM8. But either way that decision is on me (And probably an impulsive "Damnit I want that one").

Now in either case I have the option to fit a 140mm x 420mm radiator or a 120mm x 480mm radiator. Now simple math dictates that the 140mm has a surface area of 58800 sq/mm and the 120mm has an area of 57600 sq/mm. My conundrum is thus: Do the better performing AP15's make up for the loss in surface area? With the 140 radiator I would likely use Akasa Viper fans, and obviously the 120mm with Gentle Typhoon AP15's.

For both I would have to buy new fans, as I only have enough AP15's for my current 360mm radiator and have no Akasa fans. Both would be under a fan controller as needed, and both would likely end up being yellow bladed anyway as I intend to go with a black and yellow build.

*From the research I did, the Akasa (3.12 mm/H20) does perform slightly higher static pressure wise than the Gentle Typhoon AP15's (2.83 mm/H2O) albeit I am unsure if this is just due to the greater size or not. And yes I know the Viper's are a bit noisier.

*Edit - In either case using Alphacool Nexxos UT60 radiators.

I would have to say considering 120mm are better then 140mm the 480 RAD.

You could always use the 120 GT's on a 140 with adapters. Martin has done some testing that indicates that this works fine if the aesthetic works for you.

Well suppose I'm just going to order an Akasa 120mm fan to test against the GT15 myself. Unfortunately I don't have a UT60 to test with, just my GT stealth so the figures will be a bit skewed.

That and I'm relying heavily on the 140mm Akasa fan performing proportionately to the smaller 120mm fan. Guess I could go ahead and order a 120.2 UT60 I was intending to get anyway to make the results more reliable.

A 140.3 radiator has more rad space than a 120.4 if you do out the math

Dimensions for Alphacool Rads

420:

468x144x60mm = 4043520 mm3

480:

522x124x60mm = 3883680 mm3

Even if the fans are slightly weaker you're getting ~5% more rad space to offset. I'm using cougars on my 420mm rad and they are super quiet and between that and my 240mm rad with more cougar vortex fans my 3570k OC 4.6ghz and GTX690 1.2ghz OC are staying super cool.

Hmm, guess I didn't think to factor in the depth of the radiator. Suppose that does indeed increase area even more. Think either way I'll go ahead and do a test on the fans compared to each other. And either way I'll have more than enough rad space for anything I might want to cool.

But this is overclock.net, so going for overkill here.

A word of caution about fan specs, most of the time they are not real.

Keep in mind that 3 fans will have one fewer fan fab creating a dead zone compared to a 4 fan rad, so that increases usable surfacearea even ffurther. I did the total surface area calculations, and a 12fpi 420 rad has 5,400mm-Sq more surface area plus whatever is gained from the use of one less fan hub.

I can't speak for the Akasa fans, but if they are even close to the Bgears Blasters 140mm fans, they will be significantly more powerful than AP15S.

You also can't test the fans yourself given the equipment you have and the way you are going to set up the test. Any data would be inaccurate and so close to the margin of error that you would have just wasted your time and maybe even decided on the wrong thing.

As far as the fans go. Is 3x140 or 4x120 better? I just took a look at a bunch of fans on newegg and it seems that the 120mm fans push more CFM than the 140mm by a lot. The upper area of 140mm was 80s and the upper area of 120mm was 140-180CFM. So if that is true I don't think there is much comparison once the fans are bolted on.

Besides that though which one is gonna fit in your case and look nice?
