Folding with Vista

How do I install F@H as a service to start up when Windows starts. So far I tried reconfigure it to run as service but it just doesn't work (doesn't show up when windows starts).

I found the information a while ago... I'm currently running it as a service in Vista RC2...

I think that the major issue is that you can't install services unless you're logged into the administrator account. In order to access the administrator account, you have to enable it. I remember doing it throuhg Computer Management in the Administrative tools; however, I just looked it up online and couldn't find it.

However, once you've done that, you're good to go. The console will prompt you to set up the service and you'll be able to without a hitch.

Note that even if Vista says you have an Admin aco**** the "Administrator" account isn't enabled. But once you manage that, you're set

EDIT: I just looked into it further and think this would do it:

Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management.

Then go to "Local Users and Groups" on the left side. Click on the folder, that will branch out to "Users" and "Groups". Under "Users" there is an account called "Adminstrator".

Right Click, Properties, and remove the checkmark in "Account is Disabled"

Reboot, then you should have the option of loggin in as an admin.

Not to sidetrack things...but only a little...have you noticed any change in folding once you got up and running...more points...less points...no change?.

Actually, I never ran anything else than Vista on this machine... I'm sure points production is a little less than XP, but I've taken every precausion to reduce Vista's need for resources... disabled windows defender, went through msconfig and canned all the "extra" services, got rid of indexing, disabled windows aero, got rid of sidebar....

I'm pretty sure that the diffrenrece is probably less than 10%, maybe even 5%. Even though my system spec is less than some of the top folders, I average about 550PPD, which puts me near the top 25 folders of our team.

@Jimmy2Shoe - That does it, Jimmy. Thanks (+rep).

@Woop - I'd say it's to 5%-10% production. Not too sure though, because only RAMs that Vista take much (400MB), CPU at 97% for F@H (vs 99% in XP).

Hey, just for a little update, I had to install WinXP on my system, I corrupted my HDD (stupid linux penguin).

Anyway, I've setup folding again and can say that there is actually VERY little diffrence between folding in Vista and XP... although I'd have to say that multitasking with XP and F@H is easier than with Vista.

But that's good news for those who will end up buying Vista... you shouldn't see much (if any) production decrease.
