AMD 965 BE upgrade

Thread Starter
I am looking into upgrading the cpu o my computer, and was primarily looking at the 1100T/1090T or the 8120/8150. ( I plan on OC'ing anyway, so stock clocks dont matter too much, right?)

But right now I run my PII x4 965 @ 3.9GHZ stable, and have a 6870 CF setup, which I notice is bottlenecked on some of the games I play. The cpus will be at 70% and gpus only around 25-40%, the only game they have run at 99% was Dirt 3 :/

I would also like to possibly get into streaming on Twitch.tv, so that is a big consideration into the build. I know that the BD isn't a true 8-core, but it has proven pretty good at multi-threading and video encoding, so I assume it would do fairly well with Xsplit running. I know many people say the PII is where its at for gaming though. I would like to see everyone's opinion on the matter, mainly people that have upgraded through the different cpus/have a similar setup would be awesome.
check out my rig for details on what the current build is right now.

please, no fanboy-ism. Thats what all the threads become eventually.

Wait a few weeks for Vishera FX to come out. The 8350 is a decent performance increase, and is more efficient than the 8150. It should also finally kill the Stars K10h cores.

Can your current CPU overclock any higher?

Yes it is. It jsut lacks FPU. It destroys things at integer computation, however.

Edit:

Is that VSync on, or VSync off?

And how high is your CPUNB clocked?

Something sounds strange there - nothing is bottlenecking if neither are at 100%. If the GPUs were at 100% in Dirt3, then theres no problem?? What was the CPU when running Dirt3?

it's not strange. Games don't use all cores. 70% CPU usage might come from games using 2 cores (50%) and several application in background using other 20%. OP mean to said that only DiRT 3 running 99% GPU and other games not.

If you looking for upgrade path, Vishera / FX-8300 series is the way. But it might not solve your CPU bound problem.
Judging from how Trinity performs with High-end GPU (which is pathetic), I doubt Vishera can do significantly better.
Piledriver might be good in multithreaded application seems not good enough for games (especially when paired with high-end GPUs).

CPU was at 30%, its not a very cpu intensive game lol, more gpu intensive due to the motion blur and particles flying everywhere.

and yes, Bima got it right, For Dirt 3 it runs at 99%, but it ONLY works like that for Dirt3. BF3 uses roughly 40-60% on each, giving me about 30-40 fps, sometimes higher. which blows for a fps such as BF3. (cpu usage for bf3 is 100% all 4 cores, nothing else running, different graphics options make no change in gpu/cpu usage.)

Vsync on or off, any game, the gpu usage wont change, and even weirder, I get random values (even with it on), such as 25.2Hz, or 60.1Hz, sometimes 40.2 and the like. (im in US, so we are at 60Hz refresh on my 2 monitors.)

Also, I was wondering about memory: I have DDR3 1333, and CPU-Z says its at 686MHZ, can it go higher? I tried OC'ing it on my motherboard, and it ran at 800MHZ, but the system crashed when I put it through Prime95, instantly it crashed. (but thats cuz i couldnt figure out how to manually set the clock, I just put the mobo on 1600MHZ and it ran at 800 for a few minutes fine (till Prime95). I was wondering if that was cuz it tried to reach the 1600, or sometimes, but I never see it go above the 686mhz normally when I look.

DDR3 1333, and CPU-Z says its at 686MHZ

666.7MHz is DDR3-1333
800.0MHz is DDR3-1600

The number after DDR3-____ is not MHz, it is MT/s. DDR is double pumped, so on a 666.7MHz "lane", it makes 1333 transfers.

Something is wrong here, could be related to two monitors. However I don't game, so who's to say really. DVI or VGA?

one DVI, one HDMI. both 1920*1080

and typically while running SC2 or D3, i get 60.1HZ, according to Afterburner. other games it varies,

So ram is already MAX, correct? thats good to know.

If you plan to be really serious about streaming, and want to stream in high resolution with a high bitrate, you won't want anything less than a Core i7. That's just how it is. AMD is awesome, but nothing they have out now can compare with the Sandy/Ivy bridge i7s.

I'm not just being a fanboy either, I have a Phenom II x6 computer in my sig if you look.

Edit: I'm not saying you can't stream on something from AMD though. Just that if you want to best stream performance possible, it should be Core i7. I don't know of a single serious Starcraft 2 or League streamer that uses an AMD machine. Of course I don't go around asking every streamer for their specs, but of all the streamers I watch who post their hardware, it's always Core i7 machines.

If you really want to stick to AMD, I'd either go 1100T / 1090T, or wait for the new CPUs. I've got a friend with an 8120 and he's had nothing but problems with it.

converting to Intel is not an option, I just bought the 990fx board like 3 months ago to give my cards more airflow (wayyyyyyy better biggrin.gif, one isnt overheating like before! bios is sweet too)
I will wait and see how the Vishera comes out and if Steamroller will be announced any tme soon. Its not a huge pressing matter, but it would be nice to do it sooner.

I understand the feeling.

I bought the AM3+ board for my AMD rig a while before the Bulldozer chips were released. I got a Sempron 140 from Ebay for $20 to use until AMD released Bulldozer. Then they finally released it, and after reading reviews and benchmarks, I was extremely disappointed, so I ended up just grabbing the 1055T from someone here on OCN for $110. I'm really glad I didn't invest in a more expensive motherboard in preparation for Bulldozer like a lot of other users around here did. I'm actually pretty sure that's the only reason anyone actually bought a Bulldozer chip, they had invested in the motherboard before the chips were released, and just figured "well....I'm already invested in it". Otherwise I really don't know who would have bought one after reading up on them. I suppose people who don't do as much research as I. tongue.gif

Even after Vishera/Steamroller are released I'll probably just stick with my Phenom II x6 chip. It's already overkill for my LAN rig, as most of the games my friends and I play at LANs are really old titles like SWAT 4. thumb.gif
