2nd m4 ssd or 2x8gb 1866 ram?

Thread Starter
So I am upgrading my HD6850 to a HD7870 in my FX8120 rig. Giving the wife my hd6850 so she can stop playing TF2 on iGPU 760g (yuck). Also have to upgrade her power supply. Anyways my question is I have about $100 to spend and cant decide what I should spend it on between upgrading my 2x4gb kingston hyperx 1600mhz RAM to 2x8GB 1866mhz crucial RAM. and before you say you dont need 16gb of RAM the answer is yes I do. I host a 32 man TF2 server and my RAM usage goes up to 6gbish when its full and after a day or so running. This causes lag for the players. OR i could jsut buy some cheap ddr3 for my wife and take her 2 sticks of 2x4gb same kingston ram I have to run 4 sticks in my machine and buy another crucial m4 128GB SSD for Raid (0/1?)

TLDC: Would I see a difference with my FX 8core machine with 1866mhz RAM or a second SSD?

P.S. I ahve always wondered if my hyperx ram has held me back in my overclocking of my cpu. My max is 4.3-4.4ghz and that is with EVERY setting choice possible. Would be nice to try some faster, low voltage ram in this system.

P.S.S. Im on a budget so I am going with the power color HD7870. Coming from a HD6850 it should be a nice step up, what do you guys think of the 7870? Not just necessarily the brand I am choosing. I have newegg.com tab open and ready to purchase whatever you guys suggest. Thanks in advance and i will be sure to +rep ya!

just realized 6gb of ram usage is what i have to spare out of 8gb. DOH guess I may have answered my own question

no ram speeds would make no difference in speed..maby benchmarks...but if you run raid 0 your read write speeds will double and will be like a jet!!!!! pick the m4..the ram would be a waste

I'd also say go for the SSD.

But don't run the SSDs in RAID. AMD doesn't support TRIM in RAID- and AMD's raid controller onboard is absolute trash, as you'd be lucky to ever see your drives rated speed with it enabled.

Honestly though, if you're running a server- players are lagging, and you know it's a memory limitation, you answered your own post. I'd still take the SSD. rolleyes.gif You'd hardly notice a difference in RAM speed, size however, maybe.

personally i would buy a nvidia card..the new gtx 660 is good and cheap..but the 7870 would not be that huge of a difference but if you keep your old one and run crossfire..you will be even better

I'll toss in another vote for the second M4 SSD. Faster RAM is good for the "e-peen" factor, but it really doesn't bring much to the table in terms of real-world difference unless you're into benching RAM.

A second SSD (especially if you're planning to run them in RAID0) would be a little more bang for your buck - right off the start you're getting double the capacity and a faster system drive. So, you can install a few more games or some bigger programs if you need. On the other hand, the extra space for things like wear leveling is good too if you prefer to keep your software lean. Plus, I'm running a pair of Vertex4's in RAID0 on my rig, and I can tell you RAID0 SSD's are quite speedy. biggrin.gif

Thank you for all of the replies guys! Just to let you all know I ended up getting the XFX Double D HD7950, another 128GB M4 SSD, power supply for my wife so she can run the HD6850. The 7950 is going to be $270 after rebates so I couldnt pass it up. I spent a little more then I wanted to but I know I will not regret it. The 7950 is a beast card and overclocks to 1.1/1.2ghz on air I hear. +reps all aorund thanks!

Since the SSD option gives you the same 16GB of RAM you want (there is no disadvantage to having 4 DIMMs vs 2) the SSD is the optimal choice for investment.

1.1 core is easily doable on air but you can push the RAM higher
i max out with my 7950 at 1150/1725 on air with the stock cooler.. these cards are beasts, nice choice thumb.gif

You may want to look into faster RAM or running a RAM disk(you will need a lot of ram) if your server is lagging all of the time. If it is only after like every 24 hours, then that is pretty normal.
