I don;t see the point in using a camera to shoot video because zooming and focus tends to be noisy on them while silent on most camcorders and you don;' get variable apertures with most build in camcorder lenses so they're easier and cleaner to work with.

again you are not making much of a valid point...

zooming and focus is only noisy when using the in-camera microphone on the DSLR cameras.

blocking me because you are mad because myself and other photo regulars here made you look bad shows how immature you are.

again i strongly advise ignoring this persons posts.

a camcorder would be an option but not if you need full manual exposure control and better overall quality since camcorders use really low bitrate which does not result in the highest possible quality if thats important

and at this point im not helping anymore because no matter what he will continue making suggestions with poor advise.

hope you make the right choice and get something that will suit your needs

thanks for the responses. i like having the versatility of interchangeable lenses and full manual control along with a wide range of aperture settings, none of which a consumer camcorder can provide.

Due to the costs of even a T2i (none of which I can find under $400 used) I may resort to a GH1. I'm eyeing one right now for on craigs and it includes the kit lens and SD Card.

My goal is to just make high definition youtube videos, nothing crazy.

not that it matters but camcorders have variable apertures you just generally wont get manual control of it. they definitely dont have constant apertures. i dont know of any camera or lens that doesnt offer changeable aperture unless that lens/camera is broken

I have no problem with the GH1, but remember the cost of lenses. How much is it going to cost you to get the lenses you need to use the gh1. Your canon lenses will not work.

Here's a quick comparison, a sony point and shoot vs canon t3i @ full 1080p

for the purpose of just making movies for fun on youtube/vimeo the quality is the same. for professional application there is no question the T3i would be the smarter choice. there really is no truthful comparison between 2 cameras like that unless you are directly going to examine them completely rather than just on surface value of compressed streaming quality and onboard sound. yea for some users they probably will only use in-camera mic and never use the camera to its full potential in which case that video you linked is excellent for those users. but for someone that needs more from their camera a test like that is not helpful.

if i needed video just for fun for internet i would take the P&S just based on price alone knowing that it would only be good for youtube and home movies/ fun messing around

I agree with you, but from a newcomer's point of a view. A good point in shoot with good stabilization is an all round better option, given the budget of $350 dollars. The gh1 or t2i is an awesome platform to start off with, if the OP plans to build on it. Buy more lenses, buy stabilization systems, set up rigs, buy follow focus etc etc. The Sony hx9v can do a lot straight out the box, and if the OP still has a itch for more, it can still be used for excellent B roll footage.

I just wanted to throw it out there that there are other options, that can get just as good of footage with much less money. 300 for the GH1, but how much more for lenses, how much more for a stabilizer.

With the OP's goal of car videos in mind, heres one I found on the internet shot with just the Sony HX9v

The lens that most of these new HD camcorders come with is quite versatile and you can get lenses for them just like you can on pro camcorders such as fish eyes, wide angles, and telephotos and they will cost less than the expensive camera lenses you would need for any camera and they won;t have variable aperture which is unusable for shooting video in my opinion.

A lot of these camcorders also offer full manual control so I don't know who told you that they're all full auto because that's not true at all.

part of full manual control for a video camera means that you would have FULL control to manually adjust all three exposure settings of shutter speed, aperture, and sensitivity/gain while recording. most camcorder dont offer that much less have dedicated buttons for all three.

go to best buy and pick up a camcorder or look at this one:

Canon Vixia HF R300. i recently owned one and sold it on craigslist. this camera when filtered on B&H for camcorders in the $250-500 price range is the best seller

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/838776-REG/Canon_R300_VIXIA_HF_R300_Full.html

no buttons for manual exposure control and this is considered a professional quality camcorder with excellent array of features for any type of shooting.

not even sure why i bothered responding lol. hes just going to post saying 'herp derp cant read above because it says user is blocked because he hurt my feelings'

That actually looks really good! Amazing what some color grading can do.

This video is the video in particular that inspired me (yes, it's heavily post processed):

something more stylistic/commercial like is my goal.

man that whole video is half expensive car mounts and other half after effects.

while i personally thing that BMW video was rather blah compared to what i normally see done for them it would not be hard to do commercial style work like that. i would highly suggest a glidecam and jib arm for nice smooth camera moves rather than that shaky handheld move at the beginning. but you could totally make that video with a nice P&S that has decent low light performance. which is where you really get the most out of a nice DSLR like the 5DmkII that was used for that BMW video
