WD 120gb hdd crc read errors

Thread Starter
hey everyone

ive recently had my 120gb WD caviar WD1200 hdd stop working on me randomly after starting the old pc up and the drive appeared in windows but was telling me to format it.

later testing using test disk it was telling me that the filesystem was currupt and it wouldnt show me the files on the drive. but it shows the size of the hdd correctly and the bios shows it fine also the boot sector and backup boot sector said it was ok.

hd tune said smart detected the raw read error rate was a failed test.

im pretty worried about the drive as it was just a slave with all my childhood files so im pretty dissapointed at the moment mad.gif

anyone have any tips on anything i can try to recover the drive??

it might be a long shot but if i find another 120gb wd caviar can i get a professional to swap the disks to a working hdd?

cheers for all ur help:thumb:

Usually when Windows or tools like TestDisk alert you to CRC errors, it's not the simple and easy to fix kind. There's a problem called UDMA CRC errors, which indicates a bad SATA cable - but in this case I think you have the more problematic kind.

I had some WD Greens fail. They were first generation Greens which had high failure rates, and I stupidly mounted them upside down. (only option in that case) Over ~3 months they slowly picked up bad sectors (Reallocated Sector Count, Reallocated Event Count, Current Pending Sector, etc.) About 2.5 months in they hit 100 bad sectors, and then the degradation started accelerating. By 3 months they were over 900 bad sectors, and then in under a week Raw Read Error Rate and Raw Write Error Rate shot up to over a thousand. At that point Windows started alerting me to CRC errors, and my data was toast. (But I had backed it all up previously, so no loss.)

I suspect you may have to seek professional data recovery. It can be quite expensive - thousands. But once the CRC errors kick in fully, that's one of the only options.

If data recovery isn't an option due to price, you can try rescuing what you can with DDrescue. You need an empty same size or larger drive to get started, and probably a spare computer.

It may take a long time... my WD drives dropped in speed to about 2-5MB/sec when they died, and they locked up on every bad sector too. It might take weeks to pull your files off, so make sure you run it from a second computer that you can leave going...
