Can someone explain to me what Load-Line Calibration is?`Does my Gigabyte 990fxa UD3 have it? Is it relevant in overclocking and how?

Load-Line Calibration is a feature added to boards that allows the board to compensate for vDroop (voltage sag that might otherwise make your clock unstable) under times of load. Different "levels" of LLC apply different variations of compensation to your chosen vCore when load is applied to the processor. vDroop in itself (or whatever you want to call this), is a specification that was designed with longevity in mind, with that little bit of sag during high loads (assuming stock EVERYTHING), buying more time, and better temperatures with the chip used. It is extremely relevant to overclocking, as droop can make a potentially stable clock, crash.

That said, LLC can sometimes work better than it was intended to, and you end up with vBoost. Where the compensation will greatly overshoot the selected vCore, and can possibly damage or overheat the chip. Such extremes as +150mV are common with LLC set to its maximum compensation level. Use it with care.

Very informative answer! But does my motherboard have this feature? I havent seen anything called LLC in my bios.

Derp. Appologies, I forgot that part of your original post. redface.gif

It depends on the revision of the board. It will be located under "Advanced BIOS Features" if you do have it. Revision 1.0 boards did not have this feature, and were locked with a certain level of pre-applied calibration. Revision 1.1 added the option to control it.

I'm not really sure, if there's anything that can see the information, it would be AIDA64. It will probably be listed in the motherboard information, or under "Computer > DMI" if it does exist. Not sure if I ever noticed this on my UD3 however. The revision is written on the board itself, should be around the bottom-back, where PCI-e cards plug in, if I remember correctly.

Well i went into the advanced bios settings and i couldnt find anything named LLC. So i guess i have one of the older ud3's then?

Possibly, but I would look at the board to confirm. It wasn't abbreviated on my UD3, it went by "Load-Line Calibration: [value]" and it was at the dead top of the list under Advanced.

Im pretty sure i dont have that option. ill check again to be sure.

Also. CPU PLL Voltage, what is it? is it relevant in overclocking?

Long depreciated voltage from the original Phenom I days. Some believe that increasing it can make a clock stable, others think this is snake oil. Personally, I just leave it alone, as I have found it useless for pretty much everything, other than adding heat.

By definition, the CPU PLL or VDDA value controls the voltage supplied to the chip's clock multiplication logic. It's the logic that multiplies the reference clock for all of the internal components, and increasing it used to (as said above, some say yes, others no) "stabilize" this logic if you were really pumping the multipliers.
