Insufficient Power Supply?

Ok I could use some help. I'm trying to get an old Abit Fatal1ty AN8 939 socket mobo I picked up to work and its proving difficult. I have a PSU that came with my case 6 years ago. It is a coolmax 450W with 2 12V rails at 18A each. I first put my opty 165 in there and I got it to power up but never got any signal out of my vid card. So i switched to an old x300. That still didnt work. So i figured that maybe the Bios would need updating to support an opty. Then I tried an old single core 3800+ in there and now nothing will power up. I get a power up timeout error and fans start to spin but shut right off. I believe that I remembered to clear cmos after the chip change, so the right Volts should have been applied to the new chip. Any ideas? I have tried reseating the mobo to make sure i wasnt grounded. Am I though? This was supposed to be a highend OC board, so its possible that while my power supply works on my old mATX board (all the same components) but doesnt have the juice to power up this one. It is really old too. Mostly I'm just making sure I'm not missing something before i drop money on a PSU. I haven't found any good info on this board since ABit is out of business frown.gif Thanks in advance!

450W is more than fine yet I had a CoolMax 450 and it stopped working recently, did u make sure the fan still spins in it?

Also the culprit might be the motherboard. I noticed through years of testing that AMD Socket A/754/939 boards won't post if their is even a nick on the Motherboard PCB. It has nothing to do with the phase power and more along the lines if one of the electric traces on the board has been damaged(can be done via a screwdriver hitting the board the wrong way)

I am typing from this PSU now smile.gif It's fine i think. Hooked up to the old micro ATX board i have. All the same components. I havent done a super detailed look at the board, but it did power up when i had the opty in. It just never had any picture to my monitor despite trying 2 different PCIe cards. Then when i switched CPUs i couldnt get it to power up any more. Maybe i knocked a cap loose or something. I'll take a look.

OK it looks like there is a scratch on the PCB near the secondary IDE lines. Could this do it? If so why would it work with one CPU and then when i replaced it not work? I didnt remove the board to put the cpu in so i dont think i caused the scratch.

Scratch that. The PSU is having problems. I keep having problems getting it to power up and start posting on my mATX board. I get power to fans and LEDs but it never posts. I'll turn it off and wait awhile then turn it on and it powers up and runs through POST just fine. its weird, but i think its just the PSU going out. At least thats what I'm hoping because I really want to try getting to 3 GHZ with this opty smile.gif
