Windows 7,Youtube and Sony Netbook.

I recently visited my cousins house and he was complaining that his netbook had slowed down a lot. I checked it and it really is a pain to use now.

Windows 7 runs fine unless something heavy is loaded up.

Its a Sony W series (1.6ghz Atom, 2GB Ram) and is three years old. Youtube HD laaaaaaags like crazy. Anyway Around this? He just needs to view some office documents and watch youtube in HD. I don't want to put XP on it because he's got it on his homegroup.

I just require it to play Youtube HD properly.

It's probably typical spyware/malware. He needs to clean the system out:

Ccleaner
defragler
avast or antivir
spywareblaster
spybot s&d

And tell him not to download "videos"


Edit: What web browser is he using?

He's running the latest version of Crome. I'm sure he's not downloading those "videos" on his system.

Just make sure he has some form of adblocking (adblock+ and fanboy's list) and he should be fine.

Also, if you want to remotely help him with his computer I'd recommend TeamViewer. It's free

The original two versions of the Atom were never able to do youtube in HD. I hope you realize that. The only way a netbook from those days could was either with an Nvidia GPU or the Broadcom Accelerator.

You can do certain Bluray codecs up to certain resolutions but youtube HD stresses the Atom too much. 720p youtube would be pushing it. You might get lucky with the WebM versions but I can't guarantee it.

No problem. I honestly recommend not using Windows on any Atom based system prior to the N/D2xxx series just because Windows alone adds more over head on the already limited CPU and RAM.
